-includes brain and spinal cord -receives and processes information -regulates all activities of the body
Autonomic Nervous System
-organized into 2 divisions, sympathetic nerves & parasympathetic nerves

sympathetic nerves
prepare the body for emergencies and stress by increasing the respiratory rate. Becomes aroused as part of the fight of flight response.
parasympathetic nerves
return the body to normal after a response to stress.
