Reed-Sternberg cells

characteristic of Hodgkin's disease and are derived from B lymphocytes (crippled germinal center B cells), meaning they have not undergone hypermutation to express their antibody moth eaten appearance

Taste buds

clusters of encapsulated gustatory receptor cells located mostly on the surface of the tongue concentrated on peg like projections (papillae)

lymphatic system function

collect and filter lymph; teems w/macrophages T and B cells

tonsils

collections of lymphatic tissue associated with the inside of the throat and mouth (located at base of tongue and back of mouth)

Diffused lymphoid organ

do not have a defined boundary that separates them from the CT found in every body organ

lymph node

encased in a dense CT capsule scattered throughout lymphatic system w/high concentrations in upper limbs, axillary, & cervical regions

spleen

largest lymphoid organ (lateral to the stomach) capsule surrounds to protect red & white pulp entraps & destructs old erythrocytes & platelets

Hassall's corpuscles

looks like a big mess of cells in medullary area of thymus sites that accumulate dead T cells involved in the development of regulatory T cells that help prevent autoimmune responses

encapsulated lymph organs

lymph nodes, thymus gland, and spleen each separated from surrounding connective tissue (CT) by a fibrous capsule

crown

part above the gum line (gingival margin)

red pulp

part of the spleen in which blood flows through as free and fixed phagocytes in the pulp remove abnormal RBCs and other antigens

white pulp

part of the spleen that appears blue due to the lymphocyte nuclei stains sensitized to antigens and produce antibiotics to counteract them

gustatory epithelial cells

receptor cells for taste

lymphatic system

returns fluids tat have leaked from vessels back into blood via lymphatic vessels, lymph, and lymph nodes

basal epithelial cells

stems cells that divide to produce new gustatory epithelial cells

lymph follicles

w/in lymph node active center for B cell mitosis

Hodgkin's granuloma

a cancer of the lymphatic system; untreated cancerous overgrowth can lead to breakdown of both red and white pulp
