Opinion on American Poetry (1930) It is only in the last few decades that American literary contributions, particularly in the area of poetry, have attained any degree of maturity. There are exceptions, of course: Emily Dickinson and Henry Longfellow ere noteworthy artists - but they were the lonely exceptions to the rule. Indeed, the American poets have long tended to be loners and introverts, living in self-imposed exile from the bounds of ordinary society. Consider the bizarre, reclusive life of Emily Dickinson; the solitary wilderness sojourns of Henry David Thoreau; and, looking back a bit farther, the introverted, ghoulish visions of Edgar Allen Poe, Is it any wonder that the American literary tradition is fragmented, when each poet stands as an island unto himself? By contrast, the English poets have traditionally been a social bunch. Consider the clannish pre-Raphaelites, the sometimes-incestuous Romantic poets, and, looking back across the centuries, the hundreds of literary collaborations (and feuds) that have played out across London's newspapers and literary journals. The British poets have always existed within the bounds of society, rather than lurking on its fringes. While not without drawbacks, that essential social interplay - that strong fraternity of writers - has, in the main, nurtured England's creative growth. Even now, as the American literary scene finally matures, the cream of the American poets takes its inspiration from abroad. Longfellow spent several formative years in Europe; Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot, two of the most celebrated, recent American poets, chose to move away from the US. Indeed, it seems likely that the American literary tradition still needs time to grow. Perhaps another century, or even two, is required before American poetry can stand shoulder to shoulder with the heavyweights of world literature. 1) Which of the following sentences is the topic sentence of the entire passage? C) The author believes British and American poetry are of greater quality than other world literature. D) The author believes British and American poetry are of lesser quality than other world literature. 4) Which of the following conclusions may be drawn directly from the 3rd paragraph of the passage? A) Some of America's best poets moved away and never returned. B) Social interaction leads to better, more mature literature. C) To recognize that British poets are more social than American poets. Organic Landscaping Keeping mature trees alive and healthy can be a challenge for any landscaper. The difficulties vary by tree species; this section will focus on caring for oak trees, which are quite common and also quite susceptible to a wide array of problems. Oaks are beautiful shade trees. many species of oak trees grow into true giants, and a single large tree can become the focal point of an entire yard or green space. But what happens when that tree becomes sick or dies? The cost and difficulty of replacing it - not to mention the trauma of losing such a majestic specimen - make it desirable to monitor your oaks and take aggressive action as needed. Oak wilt is a common disease capable of affecting entire neighborhoods. Insects such as termites, weevils, and borers can seriously damage oaks. Also, when oaks grow old enough, a general condition known as "oak decline" may take effect. Typical tree services and landscapers will attempt to use chemicals to solve all of the above problems. Typically, they use an injector to pump a commercial chemical product into the trunk; the chemical gradually spreads through the entire tree. A tree service or landscaper will use this same chemical application is fast and relatively cheap. The chemical's effect is to slow down tree growth. Sometimes the chemical helps for a short while, because a slower-growing tree will focus more of its energy into maintaining existing foliage rather than creating new foliage. However, the chemical cannot mask serious problems indefinitely. A good, environmentally conscious tree specialist will take a non chemical approach. Dead and dying lower branches are pruned, because they absorb the tree's energy and provide an entry path for pests and tree diseases. Nutrients are applied to the soil. Nearby trees that have grown dangerously close are trimmed, because when trees are too close together, pests and diseases can easily pass from one tree to another. In some cases, unfortunately, nothing can be done. Oak wilt is extremely fast acting once it gains a foothold in a tree, and oak decline is a mysterious process that is almost always irreversible. These are sad facts, but they are not limitations of the chemical-free approach. The standard tree-service chemicals provide no long-lasting solution to these problems. Ultimately, a chemical-free approach to oak maintenance is the best approach. None of the chemicals on the market has been proven to give superior results to those of dedicated pruning and soil care. This is an important point for both the homeowner and landscaper. 1) "Ultimately, a chemical-free approach to oak maintenance is the best approach." The sentence above appears as the first sentence in the last paragraph of the article. This sentence is best describe as which of the following? A) Main idea B) Topic C) Theme D) Supporting detail 2) A homeowner has an oak tree infected with oak wilt. The homeowner tells the author that he respects his opinions on tree matters, but also that he is not prepared to spend a lot of money to save the tree. Based on the article, which of the following is a logical prediction of what the author will tell the homeowner to do? A)Use a chemical to prolong the tree's life, because even though chemicals are not a long-term solution, they might give the tree a few more years. B) Trim dead branches, and also trim any nearby trees that have grown too close to the infected tree. C) Begin a long-term program of adding nutrients to the soil around the tree. D) Do nothing; allow the tree to die a natural death. 3) The author of the article intends to do which of the following by using the words "the trauma of losing such a majestic specimen"? A) Persuade B) Inform C) Entertain D) Express feeling 4) Which of the following sentences is reflective of the author stating an opinion? Each pain medicine has its own distinct benefits and drawbacks. Opiates, such as codeine, morphine, and a variety of derived products (such as hydrocodone and oxy) are extremely potent, but patients quickly build tolerance, and the potential for addiction is high. Another class of meds, which loose encompasses both aspirin and ibuprofen, reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. This makes these meds first-line treatments for many ailments, but caution must be used, as they can, to greater or lesser degrees, thin the blood. (Depending on the patient, the blood-thinning effect may be dangerous - but in some cases it may be desirable. Indeed, many odler adults take spirin precisely for its blood-thinning effect.) Acetaminophen stands by itself; it is not a narcotic and has no effect on swelling or inflammation. Its lack of a blood-thinning effect means that is is often prescribed in situations where ibuprofen is not. At unusually high doses it may cause stomach problems, though at recommended doses this is highly unusual. A 72-year-old individual who has a history of addiction problems has been told by his doctor to avoid blood thinners. After reading the above information, which of the following pain meds is an appropriate choice? A) Aspirin B) Ibuprofen C) Acetaminophen D) Morphine
