Creative Commons (CC)

A nonprofit organization that helps content creators keep the copyright to their materials while allowing others to use, copy, or distribute their work

Wildcard

A placeholder for any number of characters

Server

A powerful networked computer that provides resources to other computers.

Encryption

A security method that scrambles or codes data as it is transmitted over a network so it is not readable until it is decrypted

3D Secure

A standard protocol for securing credit card transactions over the Internet. Using both encryption and digital certificates, 3D Secure provides an extra layer of security on a website.

Protocol

A standardized procedure computers use to exchange information

Citation style

A type of style that you use to citate text when writing a research paper, such as MLA, APA, or Chicago

IP address

A unique number that consists of 4 sets of numbers from 0 to 255 separated by periods, or dots

Web portal (portal)

A website that combines pages from many sources & provides access to those pages (Ex: Bank website)

Online social network (social networking site, social media site)

A website that encourages members to share their interests, ideas, stories, photos, music, & videos online with other registered users (Ex: Facebook, Instagram)

Fair use doctrine

Allows you to use a sentence or paragraph of text without permission if you include a citation to the original source

General search engine

An Internet browser that you use to enter a search term or phrase. It does not search the entire internet but compiles a database of info about web pages.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

An address that identifies the location of the page on the Internet

Browser

An app designed to display webpages (google chrome, safari, edge, etc).

Webpage

An electronic document that can contain text, graphics, sound, video, & links to other webpages

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS)

An encrypted website connection displays https instead of http in the URL. The "s" in https stands for "secure," and makes a secure connection to your computer

Web directory (subject directory)

An online guide to subjects or websites, usually arranged in alphabetic order

Public Technical Identifiers (PTI)

An organization that approves and controls Top-Level Domains.

Web apps

Apps that you can run entirely in a browser

E-commerce (electronic commerce)

Business transactions on an electronic network

Search operators (Boolean operators)

Characters, words, or symbols that focus the search

Specialized search tools

Concentrate on specific resources, such as scholarly journals

Business-To-Business (B2B)

Consists of businesses providing goods & services to other businesses. Ex: Market research websites, raw materials, etc.

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

Consists of hundreds of organizations & experts that work together to write web standards. The W3C publishes standards on topics ranging from building webpages, to technologies for enabling web access from any device, to browser and search engine design.

Electronic storefront

Contains product descriptions, images, & a shopping cart to collect items you want to purchase

Web server

Delivers webpages to computers requesting the pages through a browser

Transport Layer Security (TLS)

Encrypts data & helps protect consumers & businesses from fraud & identity theft when conducting commerce on the Internet

Snopes.com & factcheck.org

Fact-checking sites that you use to find professionally researched information

Quotation Marks ( " " )

Find webpages with the exact words in the same order. EX: "augmented reality" in business

Pound, Dot, Dot, Pound ( #..# )

Find webpages within a range of numbers. EX: augmented reality 2017..2022

Search tool

Finds online information based on criteria you specify or selections you make

Content aggregator

Gathers, organizes, & then distributes web content. As a subscriber, you choose the type of content you want and receive updates when new content is available. (Ex: News360, Reddit)

Copyright

Gives authors & artists the legal right to sell, publish, or distribute an original work

Web (World Wide Web)

Has changed the way people access information, conduct business transactions, & communicate

Information literacy

How you find, evaluate, use, & communicate online information

Domain name

Identifies 1 or more IP addresses

Navigation bar

Includes buttons such as Back & Forward that you can use to revisit webpages along the breadcrumb path

Usage rights

Indicate when you can use, share, or modify the images you find online

Blogs

Informal websites with time-stamped articles, or posts, in a diary or journal format

Business-To-Consumer (B2C)

Involves the sale of goods & services to the general public. Ex: shopping websites.

Intellectual property rights

Legal rights protecting those who create works

Specialty search engine

Lets you search databases, news providers, podcasts, & other online information sources that general search engines do not always access

Media sharing site

Manages media & shares them with other site members (Ex: Youtube, Flickr))

The 3-letter extension after the period (.com, .net. org, etc)

Server Address

The address of the server storing the webpage. (EX: www.cengage.com)

Pathname

The address to the folder containing the webpage (EX: .../student/index.html)

Address bar

The bar that displays the URL for the current webpage or lets you type the URL of the webpage you want to display

Word stem

The base of a word to broaden a search

Public domain

The item is available & accessible to the public without requiring permission to use, & therefore not subject to copyright

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

The most common way to transfer information around the web or retrieve the page

Hits

The most relevant results on the 1st page

File name

The name of the webpage file

Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)

The non-profit group that sets standards that allow devices, services, & applications to work together across the Internet. For example, the IETF sets standards for IP addresses. Other standards set rules for routing data, securing websites, and developing guidelines for responsible Internet use.

Congress.gov

The online database of United States Congress legislative information

Breadcrumbs

The paths that you followed to display a webpage

Ethics

The set of moral principles that govern people's behavior

Cache

The tool that keeps a copy of each page you view so that it loads a webpage more quickly the next time you go to the webpage

Home page (start page)

The webpage that appears when you open a browser

Keywords

The words that best describe what you want to find & produce a list of results that include the words or phrase

Plagiarism

Using the work or ideas of someone else & claiming them as your own

Digital certificate

Verifies the identity of the organization & vouch for the authenticity of the website
