Figurative Language

Definition- A language that communicates meanings beyond the literal meanings of words. Types- Simile, metaphor, extended metaphor, hyperbole, and personification Example- When you give similes or metaphor with something

Euphemism

Definition- A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. Examples- Passed away instead of died

Oxymoron

Definition- A special kind of concise paradox that brings together two contradictory terms. Examples- Deafening silence, and Original copy

Conflict

Definition- A struggle between opposing forces. Types- External Conflict, and Internal Conflict Examples- Outside Force, Nature, Physical Object, or Conflict That Comes From Within

Repetition

Definition- A technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis or unity. Example- Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Connotation

Definition- An attitude or a feeling associated with a word, in contrast to the word's denotation, which is its literal, or dictionary, meaning. Example- Blue is a color, but it is also a word used to describe a feeling of sadness, as in: "She's feeling blue."

Point of View (POV)

Definition- Point of view refers to the method of narration used in a short story, novel, narrative poem, or work of nonfiction. Types- First Person, Third Person, Third Person omniscient, and Third Person Limited Examples- character thinks, feels, and observes.

Rhetoric/Rhetorical Devices

Definition- Rhetorical questions are those that do not require a reply. Example- Can fish swim?

Denotation

Definition- The literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests. Example- Denotation of the word "blue" is the color blue, but its connotation is "sad"

Parallelism

Definition- The use of similar grammatical constructions to express ideas that are related or equal in importance. Example- Martin Luther King Jr. uses parallelism in his "I Have a Dream" speech.

Tone

Definition- the attitude a writer takes takes toward a subject. Example-serious, humorous, formal, informal, somber, sarcastic, playful, ironic, bitter, or objective
