Test 3 neuroscience question 3
parts of brain involved in AD
hippocampus, temporal lobe, prefrontal cortex
amyloid plaques & neurofibrillary tangles
interfere with communication between brain cells, impair neural function, and contribute to the progressive loss of memory and cognitive abilities.
symptoms of AD
memory loss, cognitive decline, language difficulties, disorientation, behavioral changes, loss of motor skills
amyloid plaques
formed by accumulation of beta-amyloid protein fragments. these protein fragments clump together and disrupt neuronal function. they are found in spaces between nerve cells.
neurofibrillary tangles
tau proteins undergo abnormal chemical changes, causing them to accumulate into twisted tangles within nerve cells. these tangles disrupt the neurons ability to transport nutrients, ultimately leading to cell death.
