amyloid plaques

formed by accumulation of beta-amyloid protein fragments. these protein fragments clump together and disrupt neuronal function. they are found in spaces between nerve cells.

neurofibrillary tangles

tau proteins undergo abnormal chemical changes, causing them to accumulate into twisted tangles within nerve cells. these tangles disrupt the neurons ability to transport nutrients, ultimately leading to cell death.
