application

A computer program that performs a specific task or tasks. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides are examples of applications. Also called apps.

extension

A program that extends the functionality of the Chromebook or Google Chrome. Extensions show up in the upper-right of the Chrome browser. Example: Google Translate - translates current web page.

hyperlink

Any text or image in a web browser, that when clicked, takes you to another web page.

full screen key

Chromebook key used to maximize window to full screen.

refresh page

Chromebook key used to reload/refresh current web page.

switch windows key

Chromebook key used to switch to next open window(s).

browser navigation arrows

Chromebook keys that move back and forward through browser web pages.

volume control keys

Chromebook keys to mute, decrease and increase system volume.

increase/decrease brightness keys

Chromebook keys used to increase or decrease screen brightness. Note: Often students will use the decrease screen brightness until the screen goes black. This is one of the first things to check when students report a black screen.

Omnibar

Google Chrome's address bar that can also be used as a search bar.

Google Docs

Google's cloud-based app used for creating documents; similar to Microsoft Word.

Google Slides

Google's cloud-based app used for creating slideshows; similar to Microsoft PowerPoint.

Google Sheets

Google's cloud-based app used for creating spreadsheets; similar to Microsoft Excel.

Google Drive

Google's file storage app; cloud based (can be accessed from other locations). Google Apps for Education accounts have unlimited storage space.

Google Chrome

Google's internet browser. Allows you to browse web pages. When logged into Chrome all of your bookmarks, history and settings follow your account.

Web Store

Google's online store where you can download/purchase free or paid apps and extensions for the Chromebook. This feature is turned off for students.

Icon

Graphic symbol used to represent a program/file/etc.

Ctrl + C

Keyboard shortcut for "copy"

Ctrl + X

Keyboard shortcut for "cut"

Ctrl + V

Keyboard shortcut for "paste"

status area

Located in the bottom right of Chromebook screen, it's the notification area on a Chromebook; shows account logged in, time, sound, internet connection, battery, etc.

Specific keys that you press together or in a sequence to execute commands or apply settings.

URL

Stands for Uniform Resource Locator, a protocol for specifying addresses on the internet (a website address).

launcher

The magnifying glass icon in the lower left screen of a Chromebook (once user is logged in). Click to open other apps; also can be used to search files and/or the internet.

shelf

The taskbar of Chromebook; where all the open/pinned programs and applications can be seen.

right-click on a Chromebook

Two finger tap on touchpad; or hold Alt key and click with one finger

scrolling on a Chromebook

Two-fingers on touch pad, drag up, down, left or right.

Ctrl + Z

Undo your last action. Repeat to undo multiple actions, one at a time.

power button

Used to power on/off Chromebook. Remind users to sign out in the status area before shutting down.
