1. economy exists for the person, not the person for economy 2. moral principles should shape economic life, choices should be judged by how they protect human life, dignity of person, common good + if they serve the person 3. way of measuring the morality of any economy is how the poor + vulnerable are faring 4. a person's right to life and the basic necessities of life 5. the right to economic initiative, productive work, just wages + benefits, decent working conditions + join unions

what are the principles of economic life (other 5):

6. the duty to work, provide for the needs of the family+ contribute to the broader society 7. free markets have clear advantages, limits + government has essential responsibilites + limits, voluntary groups cannot substitute for the proper working of the market + just policies of the state 8. society has obligation to conforming government actions, assure opportunity, meet human needs , + pursue justice in economic life 9. workers, owners, managers, stockholders, and consumers are moral agents in economic life ( by: initial creativity + investment ) 10. global economy has moral dimensions _ human consequences, decisions should protect human life + promote human rights, especially for those most in need

aid unemployed workers:

aid should be provided to those who are unwillingly unemployed and their famalies

just wage:

also called living wage, the basic wage needed to ensure wage earners' basic needs—such as food, shelter, education—are met, and that they and their families can live with dignity; correlating to cost of living

what are the benefits of work?

as a person, as a provider, as a member of society

pray:

ask for the guidance of the holy spirit to help you know how you are supposed to use your gifts for other people

safe workplace:

companies make effort to keep employees safe, penalties in place to prevent violations against one's health and safety

research the type of jobs that match your skills and interests:

consult the internet, libraries, career and guidance counselors; and family, friends, relatives, and neighbors who work in your fields of interest

gain experience:

do volunteer work and learn from professionals in the field

pension & insurance:

employers have obligation to help provide insurance for the medical care of employees (illness or work related), health care is a basic human right

work on a long-range career goal:

find an occupation that matches your skills + interests + determine the educational requirements necessary to enter this career; research some schools/programs that can get you the education you need to enter that career

to strike:

given the "proper conditions and within just limits," strikes can be morally acceptable; work stoppage; 2 types (sit in - sit in place of work & stop working + workstoppage: protesting outside )

what are the rights of workers?

just wage, to rest, safe workplace, personality safeguarded, aid unemployed workers, pension & insurance social security w/ maternity, to assemble (unions), to strike

pray, determine your interest/abilites, research the type of jobs that match your skills and interests, gain experience, work on a long-range career goal

to rest:

right of workers to proper rest, elevate the human spirit on lord's day to worship a loving god in humility, a great opportunity to strengthen family life, spend time with friends, and cultivate the mind

vocation:

the call to holiness emanating from baptism to live out your christian destiny in this world and the next; vocation also refers to a special call to share in the mission of the church, especially as a priest or consecrated religious; comes from god; 3 vocations: clergy, marriage life, single life

social security with maternity:

the role of mother should never be hindered

to assemble (unions):

when unions are the best way to uphold the dignity of workers, people have the right to form them; contrary to unions are strikes

as a member of society:

work enables people to contribute to the well-being of the larger community, it is not for one's self its for the family, nation, & entire humanity

as a person:

work is a fundamental means for you to express and develop yourself as a human being a unique creature of god

as a provider:

work is the ordinary way for you to provide for your material needs; this is especially true for families who must feed, clothe, shelter, and educate their children
