Vitamin D
The skin produces and absorbs vitamin D in conjunction with ultraviolet rays from the sun, which activate a vitamin D precursor present in the skin.
Temperature Regulation
The skin regulates body temperature. Cooling of the body occurs through sweating.
Sensations
The skin transmits sensations through nerve receptors, which are are sensitive to pain, temperature, touch, and pressure.

Protection
Protects underlying tissues from injury by preventing the passage of microorganisms.
Secreting Sebum
Sebum is an oily substance that softens and lubricates the hair and skin. It prevents the hair from becoming brittle and it decreases water loss from the skin. It also has a bactericidal(Bacteria-killing) action.
