The Regions of the United States
The United States is divided into 5 regions. Be able to identify the regions on a map.
1. Northeast 2. Southeast 3. Midwest 4. Southwest 5. West
List five types of landforms found in the United States
MOUNTAINS, PLAINS, CAVES, DESERTS, CANYONS, PLATEAUS, BEACHES, VALLEYS
States
There are 50 states plus the District of Columbia (where our nation's capital is located) also known as Washington D.C. Each state has a government that allows the state officials to make choices about state issues, such as education and laws.
Why is it important to know what the weather is going to be?
To decide what to wear, what activities to do, for safety reasons
Regional boundaries
are different because it is not set by any rule or law. They are based on major landforms of the area. For example: Northeast- hilly and rocky with farmland Southeast- rolling hills, mountains, and plains bordered by beaches Midwest- plains and lakes Southwest- plateaus and canyons West- deserts and mountains
A human resource
are people who make products or provide services.
Natural resources
are something in the environment that people can use. Forests, soil, water, and plants are examples of natural resources. Natural resources can be processed and changed into raw materials, such as, oak trees can be made into lumber, which then can be used to build homes and furniture.
Renewable resource
can be replaced. Soil and water are renewable resources
Nonrenewable resource
cannot be replaced. Fuels, natural gas, oil are all nonrenewable resources
The northeast region natural resources
has coal that has produced industry in that area. In the southeast region agriculture is major industry due to valuable soil. An example of a crop grown in the southeast region is cotton, which is made into cloth.
Midwest region
has flat, grassy plains and large areas of forest, rolling hills, and 4 of the Great Lakes; it also has the Mississippi River, Ohio River, and Missouri River
Louisiana's weather
has mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers Most of the southwest area has hot and dry weather.
The southwest region natural resources
has oil, natural gas, and cotton as examples of industry in that region.
Southwest region
has only 4 states, it has deserts and canyons, and it has the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon,
Northeast region
has the Appalachian Mountains- is mostly hilly and rocky along the Atlantic Coast, but has good farmland
Climate
includes the changes in weather that happen during seasons of the year. Two major factors of weather and climate are precipitation and temperature.
West region
it has the highest and lowest of temperatures and landforms, it has Death Valley with the highest of temperatures and Alaska with lowest records of temperatures, it has coastal mountains, green valleys, and heavy forests, Hawaii and Alaska are included in this region
The climate of a place depends on
its location like distance from the equator, how far a place is from a large body of water, and elevation.
State boundaries
legal borders with exact measurements around each state. (Where one state stops and another starts.) The government set these state boundaries.
Southeast region
the Appalachian Mountains extend in this region-it has plains with rich farm land- largest cave system named the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, it has the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico
The U.S. has many different climates
tropical climate- very warm all year, area is near equator (Florida, Hawaii) polar climate- coldest climate, areas near north and south pole areas (small part of Alaska) subarctic climate- covered with snow most of the year, but has short periods of warm weather during summer (most of Alaska) temperate climate- moderate temperatures, neither very hot nor very cold
