Prohibition (18th amendment)
(18th Amendment) illegal to manufacture, distribute, or possess any type of alcoholic beverage (distilled spirits). The Noble Experiment. Opened the door for organized crime (Al Capone), bootleggers and smuggling.
Harlem Renaissance
A period in the 1920s when African-American achievements in art and music and literature flourished
Teapot Dome Scandal
Bribery scandal involving President Warren G. Harding. Bribes for access to oil on government land. Albert Fall goes to jail. (Fall Guy) Result- People loose trust in the government.
Organized Crime
Criminal activity that is run like a business. Engage in a wide variety of illegal activity. Controlled the distribution and sale of alcohol during prohibition.
Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan
Darrow- Defense attorney for John Scopes. Argued for evolution to be taught in public school. Winner. William Jennings Bryan- Prosecutor Scopes Monkey Trial; Against the teaching of evolution in school. Pro creationism, religion, fundamentalism
Palmer Raids
During the 1st Red Scare the government sought to capture and arrest suspected radical communists. Mostly Italian and Eastern European immigrants and especially those identified as anarchists and communists.
Henry Ford and the Assembly Line
Ford revolutionized the efficiency of manufacturing by mechanically moving the semi-finished product from work station to work station, which made assembly faster, cheaper and with less labor.

Bootlegger
Illegal business of transporting (smuggling) alcoholic beverages during prohibition. Usually run by organized crime. Also known as moonshiners and rum runners.
Great Migration
Movement of over 300,000 African American from the rural south into Northern cities between 1914 and 1920
Jazz Age
Nickname for the 1920's. African Americans introduced jazz music accompanied with modern ideas, flappers, dance, and pop culture. All became possible with increased wages and shorter work days.
Scopes "Money Trial" 1925 (fundamentalism v. modernism)
Science teacher John Scopes convicted and fined $100 for teaching evolution. He was supposed to teach creationism (Adam & Eve) under Tennessee law. Supreme Court overturned the conviction. Evolution allowed to be taught in school
Immigration Quota System
Set quotas (3%)on the number of immigrants from certain countries. Idea was to keep out communists, criminals, and "undesirables" No Asians of any kind allowed. Based in fear and racism.
Consumerism/installment buying
Started by Henry Ford. Buying on Credit. Buy now pay later. America becomes an I have to have it now society.

Two major goals: Help Americans become small business owners and/or help them move back to Africa
