Which quotation from the passage best reveals a theme of the text? "The din was deafening. Those who could add up while yelling themselves hoarse knew that Gryffindor now had four hundred and seventy-two points--exactly the same as Slytherin. They had tied for the house cup--if only Dumbledore had given Harry just one more point. Dumbledore raised his hand. The room gradually fell silent. 'There are all kinds of courage,' said Dumbledore, smiling. 'It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom.'" "The din was deafening. Sailors can communicate at night by using a combination of search lights and flags. Ships have a regular way of talking to one another, by means of flags arranged in certain ways. This form of signaling is comprehended by all sailors. It is a universal language, and no matter from what country or in what seas ships may be sailing, the language of the flags makes it possible for them to be understood. There has been one difficulty with the flag-signals, and that has been that they were useless at night. When it became too dark for the flags to be seen, sailors had no other means of communication. The invention of the searchlight set men thinking, and at last the idea struck one man that if the searchlight were turned on the flags, it ought to be perfectly possible to see them in the darkest night. A few nights ago, two tugs went down to Sandy Hook to try if the experiment would work. To their great delight they found it did answer perfectly. The tugs were stationed about a mile and a half apart, and could read with ease the messages waved across the water. What detail from the text BEST conveys the theme that people can make beauty in their own lives? "Lots of people can't find beauty in my neighborhood, but I can. Ever since elementary school, I've been making beauty out of everyday things--candy wrappers, pages of a newspaper, receipts, rip-outs from magazines. I cut and tear, arrange and rearrange, and glue them down, morphing them into something no one else thought they could be. Like me. I'm ordinary too. The only thing fancy about me is my name: Jade. But I am not precious like the gem. There is nothing exquisite about my life. It's mine, though, so I'm going to make something out of it." - Renee Watson, Piecing Me Together "Ever since elementary school, I've been making beauty out of everyday things--candy wrappers, pages of a newspaper, receipts, rip-outs from magazines." Read the excerpt from a story. Which of the following is a theme that could be supported with details from this passage? Long, long ago, there lived an old farmer and his wife who had made their home in the mountains, far from any town. Their only neighbor was a bad and malicious badger. This badger used to come out every night and run across to the farmer's field and spoil the vegetables and the rice which the farmer spent his time in carefully cultivating. The badger at last grew so ruthless in his mischievous work, and did so much harm everywhere on the farm, that the good-natured farmer could not stand it any longer, and determined to put a stop to it. So he lay in wait day after day and night after night, with a big club, hoping to catch the badger, but all in vain. Be careful who and what you underestimate. Don't let impatience get the better of you. Try to work together to overcome conflict. Animals will always try to outsmart humans.

Which of the following details best conveys a theme that humans are both destructive and amazing? This passage is an excerpt from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This book is unique in that the narrator is death, or at least, a character that represents death. In the passage, the narrator refers to The Book Thief, which is both the title of this book, the title of a book in the story, and a nickname of the girl, Liesel, a main character in the book. "Yes, I have seen a great many things in this world. I attend the greatest disasters and work for the greatest villains. But then there are other moments. There's a multitude of stories (a mere handful, as I have previously suggested) that I allow to distract me as a I work... I pick them up in the unluckiest, unlikeliest places and I make sure to remember them as I go about my work. The Book Thief is one such story.... I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she did not already know?... I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, its words and stories so damning and brilliant... All I was able to do was turn to Liesel Meminger and tell her the only truth I know. I said it to the book thief and I say it now to you... I am haunted by humans." "There's a multitude of stories (a mere handful, as I have previously suggested) that I allow to distract me as a I work..." "But then there are other moments. Which of the following details from the text, written by William Beverly Harrison in 1897, best helps to express the central idea? Poor people must live near their work because they cannot afford to pay car-fares back and forth every day. They are crowded together in small sections of houses in the most terrible manner. Small apartments should have plenty of light, air, and water to help make them bearable. Instead, the small rooms have little or none of these necessary things. In these houses, the lack of water is one of the greatest evils. Instead of giving each space a nice sink, and a stove that can boil water, there is no water put into any of the rooms. This means that people do not have hot and cold water. Outside on the landing of the home, there is water and a rough sink. Everyone uses this in common. They all have to go into the hall to fetch every drop of water they use. This is also the only place they have to empty the dirty water away. In some houses, the sinks are not on every floor, and in these, the poor women have to drag their heavy buckets of water up and down the stairs. These very poor apartments are not heated. Each person has to keep his own rooms warm. Every drop of warm water they need for cooking or washing has first to be boiled over the stove, and so the poor are forced to use a great deal more coal than more well-to-do people need. "Many of the tenement-houses have been allowed to get so dilapidated, that the Board of Health has taken the matter in hand ..." "It is not because they don't pay the landlords enough rent that the poor have no comforts in their homes." "...people have to take them clean or dirty, well or badly built, because they must make their home in that neighborhood." "Poor people must live near their work, because they cannot afford to pay car-fares back and forth every day."

"Many of the tenement-houses have been allowed to get so dilapidated, that the Board of Health has taken the matter in hand ..."

Schools should offer life skills classes along with existing classes. Schools are intended to prepare young people for adult life, but the reality is that they do nothing of the sort. While schools teach children skills such as essay writing, algebra, and biology, daily life demands an understanding of budgets, cooking, and time management. Yet there is little support for changing the school curriculum to require students to learn life skills. Certainly, there is a lot to be said for children learning about the history of the human race. And children who do not learn to read, write, or understand science are likely to do poorly in the adult world. Still, it seems foolish to teach ancient history or dissection skills while leaving students ignorant of how to open a bank account, maintain a car, or pay taxes. A good solution to this problem is to add to the school curriculum. Students should be offered a "life skills" class that includes segments on a variety of topics. Some possible life skills segments are personal finance, transportation, taxes, cooking, shopping, and finding and paying for a home. Read the excerpt from a story. Which of the following is a theme that could be supported with details from this passage? Excerpts from "The Farmer and the Badger" by Yei Theodora Ozaki Long, long ago, there lived an old farmer and his wife who had made their home in the mountains, far from any town. Their only neighbor was a bad and malicious badger. This badger used to come out every night and run across to the farmer's field and spoil the vegetables and the rice which the farmer spent his time in carefully cultivating. So he lay in wait day after day and night after night, with a big club, hoping to catch the badger, but all in vain. The farmer's trouble and patience was rewarded, for one fine day on going his rounds he found the badger caught in a hole he had dug for that purpose. The farmer was delighted at having caught his enemy, and carried him home securely bound with rope. Animals will always try to outsmart humans. Try to work together to overcome conflict. Don't let anger get the better of you. Being determined and patient can pay off.

Which of the following details best supports the central idea of this text? The best way to help the environment is to take action in your own life. But what does that mean? Many people believe that recycling paper and plastic is the first important step. Others favor the use of electric cars. Wind turbines can provide clean energy to your home. All these measures can lessen the pollution you create. Or can they? Let's look carefully at each of these popular environmental actions. Recycling paper and plastic sounds like a great way to save energy. But in some cases, it takes more energy to recycle than it does to make new paper and plastic! Electric cars make no air pollution, which is wonderful, but they require energy to run. From where does that energy come? Does it come from coal-burning factories? Wind turbines are a different issue. Yes, they can make clean energy, and sometimes they are a great choice. But not always. That's because wind turbines can make a lot of noise, and they also create flickering light. If they are built right near houses, they can drive home owners crazy. Not all environmental actions are as good as they seem. Yes, it's important to do what you can to protect the planet, but it's also important to learn enough to make smart choices. "Electric cars make no air pollution..." "Yes, they can make clean energy, and sometimes they are a great choice." "Many people believe that recycling paper and plastic is a first important step." Which of the following best states the central idea of this text, written by William Beverly Harrison in 1897? Some weeks ago, it was said that the terrible Dead Man's Curve in New York City was to be done away with. Nothing, however, has so far been done, and the people are getting tired of risking their lives, to oblige a cable car company. At last the officers of the law have interfered, and the owners of the road are being prosecuted, for having their cars run in such a manner that it is a danger to citizens. The president of the company was called before the Grand Jury. He said that it was impossible to run the cars around that curve in any other way than that which is in use at the present time. Several engineers who understood all about cable cars were then called. They said that if the company would put a short cable on the stretch of road around the curve, there need be no more danger. The president of the company declared that a short cable would not work. The case is to go to trial. While the worst that can be done to the company is to be fined $500, people are looking forward to the trial, because they expect that the witnesses who give evidence will show some way of getting the car round the curve without shaking everybody who is in it, and killing or wounding all who cannot jump out of its way. The president of a cable car company says he cannot fix a dangerous problem. A court case may help resolve dangers related to cable cars. Five-hundred dollars is too small an amount for the company to be fined. People are suing a cable car company.

A court case may help resolve dangers related to cable cars.

Read the excerpt from a story. Which statement BEST expresses the theme? Long, long ago there lived in Japan a brave warrior known to all as Tawara Toda, or "My Lord Bag of Rice." His true name was Fujiwara Hidesato, and there is a very interesting story of how he came to change his name. One day he sallied forth in search of adventures, for he had the nature of a warrior and could not bear to be idle. So he buckled on his two swords, took his huge bow, much taller than himself, in his hand, and slinging his quiver on his back started out. He had not gone far when he came to the bridge of Seta-no-Karashi spanning one end of the beautiful Lake Biwa. No sooner had he set foot on the bridge than he saw lying right across his path a huge serpent-dragon. Its body was so big that it looked like the trunk of a large pine tree and it took up the whole width of the bridge. One of its huge claws rested on the parapet of one side of the bridge, while its tail lay right against the other. The monster seemed to be asleep, and as it breathed, fire and smoke came out of its nostrils. At first, Hidesato could not help feeling alarmed at the sight of this horrible reptile lying in his path, for he must either turn back or walk right over its body. He was a brave man, however, and putting aside all fear went forward dauntlessly. Crunch, crunch! he stepped now on the dragon's body, now between its coils, and without even one glance backward he went on his way. Be careful what you wish for. Adventures can lead you to unusual places. Bravery is necessary in order to overcome your fears. Boredom can lead to exciting discoveries.

Which of the following statements best expresses the central idea of this text? The smart phone is an absolutely essential part of daily life. We use it to communicate with one another by text and spoken word almost without thinking about it. We use it to check our email and social media, and respond to messages instantaneously. It's hard to believe that just a few short years ago there was no such thing as a smart phone. In fact, there was no such thing as a cell phone! Back before the turn of the 21st century, people used what are called land lines. A person would call a telephone located in another person's house. If no one was home, an answering machine would take a message. It could be hours before the message was received and answered. Incredibly, there was even a time before answering machines. Instead of hearing a message from an answering machine, callers would hear busy signals (indicating that the phone was in use) or would hear the phone ring many times (indicating that no one was home). When this happened, the caller had no choice but to ring again. The advent of smart cell phones is exciting because it makes it so much easier to communicate. On the other hand, it makes it impossible to step away from communication. Back in the olden days it was harder to stay in touch, but much easier to get away from it all! It was hard to reach people before the invention of answering machines. Smart phones are a wonderful invention. There are pros and cons to instant communication. Telephones have gone through many changes over time.

Which detail best supports the central idea in this text, written by William Beverly Harrison in 1897?
