Standford Prison Experiment
The experiment had people playing guards and prisoners in a simulated prison. Purpose was to see the effects of authority of role playing. When good people are put in bad situations, who wins? The outcome was the the "guards" and "prisoners" began to take their roles seriously and the experiment had to be called off after 6 days.
self-fulfilling prophecy
a belief that leads to its own fulfillment (if you go looking for it you'll find it) RWA: i believe my love lives sad and then i continue to fulfill that w my actions
Prisoner's Dilemma
a particular "game" between two captured prisoners that illustrates why cooperation is difficult to maintain even when it is mutually beneficial RWA: me and ainsley get arrested for stealing coke, if I take a bribe deal and a cake I will get off free but she will go to jail, she has the same option. only the first person to say yes gets the deal
social trap
a situation in which the conflicting parties, by each rationally pursuing their self-interest, become caught in mutually destructive behavior RWA: someone in class is mocking mr Roberts bc they are upset, I start mocking them bc they are being mean to my favorite robby and we both get In trouble for mocking people
reciprocity norm
an expectation that people will help, not hurt, those who have helped them RWA: If ainsley gets accused of cheating but she gave me answers then I would stand up for her and defend her bc she helped me
prejudice
an unjustifiable (usually negative) attitude towards a group and its members generally involves stereotyped beliefs, negative feelings, and a predisposition to discriminatory action RWA:Mr. Roberts wants to combine A and B block psychology and A block treats B block poorly bc we stereotyped them as a worse class.
implicit
an unthinking knee-jerk response operating below radar, leaving us unaware of how our attitudes influence our behavior RWA: If I think that I am the most superior person in the world I may unconsciously disregard other people as less important
door-in-face
ask for something ridiculous then settle for less RWA: I know I want a bouncy house at my grad party so I ask for two giant waterslide bouncy houses, when my mom says that's two much I say "fine ill just have one normal bouncy house"
social facilitation
audience influences you based on the task you are preforming. if you know your task well and you have had success audience will help and aid your performance RWA: at the gym Natty deck has a hype circle around him before hitting a PR bc he knows the crowd will help him motivate to hit it

feeling less at fault when a big group is taking part RWA: only one person gets in trouble for the senior prank and they say "but everyone else did it too"
stereotyping
generalized (sometimes accurate but often overgeneralized) belief about a group of people RWA: i assume anyone who drives a mini coop is annoying😬
group polarization
groups decisions end up as extreme versions of the individual members predispositions. RWA: first ainsley suggests we have an easy day the last day before break and then James suggests a movie day and then Ira suggests we don't have class at all. final decision is a senior skip day no one goes
halo effect
idea that we as people think attractive people are trustworthy. more likely to give attractive people 2nd chances etc. RWA: as I go through the roommate process I judge their entire character on their looks at first glance
superordinate goals
if a group is given a task that can be accomplished only with cooperation of all members that group tends to bond RWA: never spoke to a girl in my health class before but then we did a roommate/apartment assignment together and we are friendly now.
social inhibition
if audience gathers around you when you are trying to do something you've never done before it will likely hinder your performance RWA: TBH if natty deck and them watched me workout i'd probably drop the bar on my face when i could do it if i was alone
social loafing
individuals in a group exert less effort than they would if on their own. usually unconcious RWA: A block plays tug of war, my side of the room vs the other side and I would pull less hard than If it was me vs. ainsley
normative social influence
influence resulting from a person's desire to gain approval or avoid disapproval RWA: I act a certain way in class with ainsley so that my desk buddy will approve of me even if its not how I usually act
informational social influence
influence resulting from one's willingness to accept others' opinions about reality RWA: Ainsley thinks one way about Psych and I think a different way but I accept her view as her own.
central route persuasion
making judgments based off of logistical reasons RWA: choosing a college because they have a certain program that will open up opportunities for you.
Groupthink
members of a group find themselves "going along" with the flow of the group or the apparent wishes of the groups leader. results from desire for harmony in group or bc members are differing to a strong/feared leader RWA: when the students in the PAC are fighting to keep those bathrooms unlocked, kids who never use the bathroom there will go along and fight with us for them to be unlocked.

obedience to authority; had participants administer what they believed were dangerous electrical shocks to other participants; wanted to see if normal people would deliver horrible acts/punishments if told to do so by authority figures
peripheral route persuasion
occurs when people are influenced by an overall look or vibe, something enjoyable not logistical RWA: celebrities in commercials because their vibe will attract a certain group of buyers
altruism
putting others before yourself RWA: i let my life be a mess for my friends to have comedic relief from it #goodfriend
bystander effect
tendency for any given bystander to be less likely to give aid if other bystanders are present RWA: when mr. Roberts passes out in class gretchen is more likely to laugh than step up to help.
foot-in-door
tendency for people who have first agreed to a small request to comply later with a large request. get a little bit at a time and it'll add up RWA: with a mother who doesn't want you to have a grad celebration at all, you ask for a small party with your family, then after she agrees ask to inv just a few friends and then if she agrees ask to inv a couple more friends.
Confrimation bias
tendency to focus on info that agrees, while ignore info that disagrees
fundamental attribution error
the tendency for observers, when analyzing another's behavior, to underestimate the impact of the situation and to overestimate the impact of personal disposition RWA: If someone is driving 30MPH on 3A when its a 50 I will assume they are a bad driver not knowing what's going on in their mind or their car
just-world phenomenon
the tendency for people to believe the world is just and that people get what they deserve RWA: tbh karmas a bitch bad people get bad things👎
hindsight bias
the tendency to believe, after learning an outcome, that one would have foreseen it RWA: when another talking stage fails and then i think "i knew it wouldn't work out"
scape goat theory
the theory that prejudice offers an outlet for anger by providing someone to blame RWA: When I bumped the chicky worker i blamed him bc chicky workers r dumb and he stood in the way
situational attribution
the theory that we explain someones behavior by crediting the situation RWA: someone going along with the group and acting in a way they usually don't, we assume that's how they always act
social exchange theory
theory that our social behavior is an exchange process, willingness to do something is relative to gain RWA: willing to have a bad HU bc he has a sexy mercedes' and it's good for the plot
dispositional attribution
theory that we explain someones behavior by crediting the persons disposition RWA: someone holds the door for me and I assume they are a generally good person based of their actions
discrimination
unjustifiable negative behavior toward a group and its members RWA: when I see caroline in the hallway I push her against the lockers.

when things don't go your way you blame others. when things go your way you praise yourself. RWA: if my mom threw an egg to me across the room and I dropped it I would blame her for throwing an egg, if I caught it I would praise myself for an amazing perfect awsome catch
