Why did alliances cause more issues?

Alliences meant that some countries had no option but to go to war if one of their allies declared war first.

Austria-Hunagary declared war on Serbia. A-H had an allience with Germany and Italy. Serbia had an allience with Russia and Russia had an allience with France and the British Empire, so everyone was obligated to go into war.

Because Germany and France had doubled their army, other countries began to race to get bigger and stronger armies. Germany and Britain started to compete for mastery of the seas. Germans created more battleships to beat Britain. They also made a plan. If Russia attacked Germany, they would attack France through Belgium.

Imperialism was a part of Germany's increasing anger with Britain and France because since Germany had entered the scramble late, he didn't have as much land as Britain and France. That created a rivalry between them. By 1900 the British Empire extenden over five continents. France had control of large areas of Africa. Germany gets mad with them because they has most of the land and he wants land too. They're like it's not our fault you entered the scramble late. We've been working for this land for years. So, B and F made an allience with Russia to protect themselves from Germany.

Why was nationalism an important factor?

It was an important factor because it brought Italy and Germany together since they wanted more national pride. This created more conflict in the reaction to the alliances between France and Russia.

The russian revolution

The Russian population suffered very much during the war. They did not have enough food, and wood for heating was also rare. They blamed the Tsar Nicholas II, for Russia's bad situation.

What started world war one?

The assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand. The assassination was planed by a Serbian terrorist group, so Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because of this.

The Western and Eastern Fronts

The first month of combat consisted of bold attacks and rapid troop movements on both fronts. In the west, Germany attacked first Belgium and then France. In the east, Russia attacked both Germany and Austria-Hungary. In the south, Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia. Following the Battle of the Marne (September 5-9, 1914), the western front became entrenched in central France and remained that way for the rest of the war. The fronts in the east also gradually locked into place.

Trench Warefare

The middle part of the war, 1916 and 1917, was dominated by continued trench warfare in both the east and the west. Soldiers fought from dug-in positions, striking at each other with machine guns, heavy artillery, and chemical weapons. Though soldiers died by the millions in brutal conditions, neither side had any substantive success or gained any advantage.
