Data Scientists create new ways of modeling and understanding unknowns. Data Analysts are people who find answers to existing questions by creating insights with data.

Machine Learning - Performance is the excellence. This is essentially making many decisions under uncertainty. Statistics - Rigor is the excellence. Making a few important decisions under uncertainty. Analytics - Speed is the excellence. Unsure how many decisions to make.
