What is a Computer Network?

LAN

(Local Area Network) A computer network limited to the immediate area usually the same building or floor of a building or a school campus.

WAN

(Wide Area Network) A network that connects computers and other resources over great distances.

Switches

A computer networking device that connects network segments

Access point (AP or wireless AP)

A device that receives the signals and transmits signals back to wireless network interface cards (NICs).

optical fiber

A long, thin strand of glass or plastic that can carry light for long distances without allowing the light to escape.

client/server network

A network that uses centrally administered computers, known as servers, to enable resource sharing for and to facilitate communication between the other computers on the network.

Router

A type of computer that forwards data across a network

UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)

A type of twisted pair cabling that does not include shielding around its conductors.

Network Interface Card (NIC)

An expansion card that enables a computer to connect other computers or to a cable modem to facilitate a high-speed Internet connection.

Modem

Communications hardware device that facilitates the transmission of data.

Internet Service Provider (ISP)

a company that provides access to the internet for a monthly fee

peer-to-peer network

any network without a central file server and in which all computers in the network have access to the public files located on all other workstations
