Nikita Khrushchev became the leader of the Soviet Union following the death of Joseph Stalin. Stalin was a pretty evil guy and Khrushchev wanted to distance himself from Stalin's policies. Khrushchev was still interested in winning the Cold War and spreading communism but he did not want to be associated with Stalin.
