Find Space Invaders. Signal early.

This not only communicates your intentions to other drivers so they may adjust accordingly, but it is also a way to ask for permission (and possibly cooperation) to perform a maneuver.

Eyes. Use PNR when going straight through a stale green light.

This technique allows you to keep you eyes off of the light and in the intersection where the cars are.

Turn

Use high central vision. AIM

We will always keep our eyes up the road in whatever direction we wish to travel. We will find targets in our high central vision while keeping our pivot point in our low peripheral vision.

Find Space Invaders. Control all possible space invaders.

We will constantly be watching for snipers, chargers, and anything else that can interfere with us in any way.

Eyes. Check mirrors every 5 seconds.

What is happening in front of you is only part of the story. You need to always be aware of what is happening behind you (and potentially next to you) as well. Constantly checking your mirrors will allow you to have 360 degrees of awareness.

At an intersection with a stop sign, where are the two places you should stop?

Before the first white line (stop line, crosswalk or at the curb line)

When calling Point of No Return, you must use the following order:

Call the light, check your speed, call "point", clear the intersection

For our purposes, our front pivot point is the top center of the steering wheel and the rear pivot point is the bottom center of the rear window. We will always find a target and drive our pivot point toward that target.

If the approaching car is traveling 30 mph, you need an 8 second gap which is the size of 1 football field. If the approaching car is traveling 40 mph, you need car a 10 second gap which is the size of 2 football fields. If the approaching car is traveling 50 mph, you need a 12 second gap which is the size of 3 football fields.

Eyes. SMOG all lane changes and when pulling out into traffic.

If you do all four steps to this maneuver (signal, mirror, outside mirror, go) every time you change lanes or pull into traffic, you should never accidentally sideswipe another vehicle.

It is imperative that you know whether or not the driver behind you is paying attention whenever you are going to slow down or stop. When your foot comes off the accelerator you must check that rear-view. Every time.

The Point of no Return (PNR) is one of our eye strategies.

It's what we use to deal with stale green lights that can turn red at any moment. The point of no return is the last safe point to begin to stop before the light if it turns red. We use this strategy to keep our eyes off the light and to make our decision to stop or go before the light.

Keep eyes moving; no fixed stare. The situation around you is always changing, with different things always competing for your visual attention. If you let your eyes settle on one thing for too long you are more likely to miss something else. That something else might be the thing that causes you to wreck.

Sometimes you may need to use your horn to get someone's attention. A light tap is usually enough. Try not to use it in anger.

Space, Aim, Find, Eyes

Find Space Invaders. Use brake lights to signal cars behind you.

The best way to communicate with the car behind you is to tap your brake pedal a few times to flash your brake lights. This is a good way to warn someone of danger up ahead or to the fact that you may need to slow down or stop unexpectedly.

GAP: Flashing Yellow SIGN

This intersection is also considered an unprotected left. Only proceed if the oncoming traffic is clear and you have a safe gap in traffic to complete your turn.

Find Space Invaders. Make eye contact whenever possible.

This is especially effective at intersections or anywhere someone may be trying to pull into traffic.

Aim your pivot point over your path of travel. AIM

This is the ground we will cover on the way to our target.

Whether turning or going straight we will constantly be looking for targets to drive to.

Eyes. Check for two cars back when stopped.

You have learned to check your mirror before slowing down to stop. Now you need to learn to always check for two cars back after you have come to a stop. Once you have two cars stopped behind you, you can safely relax knowing that those two cars will act as a buffer against any other cars failing to stop.

Eyes. Clear all intersections;

left, right, center, peek away. It is up to you as a safe driver to clear every intersection every time. Do not assume people are going to stop. A timely clear may be the one thing that gets you (and the guy running the red) home safe
