What two functions does the eye perform in relation to color?

Analogous Color Harmony

Analogous color harmonies are positioned are created by choosing colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. They are all related so they blend well together and merge into one another. Works best if you choose one dominate color and use smaller amounts of the others.

Neutral Color Harmony

Black, white, Gray as well as brown, tan, ivory, and beige.

What does Red light do?

Exposure to red light raises heart rate and blood pressure

Split-Complementary Color Harmony

Made when one hue is used with the two hues adjacent to its complement.

Accented Neutral

Neutral color scheme with a pop of color. The accent color is added for interest.

Secondary Colors

Orange, Green, Violet

What does Blue light do?

Promotes the release of the hormone cortisol which stimulates and wakes us up and inhibits the release of melatonin.

Red, Orange, Yellow

Primary Colors

Red, Yellow, Blue

Tertiary Colors

Red-Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue-Green, Yellow-Green, Orange-Yellow, Orange-Red

Intensity/saturation/tone

The brightness or dullness of a color (adds complement to the hue)

Value

The lightness or darkness of a color (adds white or black to the hue)

Hue

The root of the color, the pure color, found on the color wheel. Ex: Red and Orange

Monochromatic color Harmony

The simplest because it uses a single hue from the color wheel. Variation is achieved by changing the value and/or intensity of the hue. Accents of neutrals can be used to add interest. Can make a room appear larger.

Triadic Color Harmony

Uses three colors that are equally distant from each other on the color wheel. Primary colors and secondary colors form a triadic color scheme as well as others.

Complementary Color Harmony

Using two colors that are positioned directly opposite each other o the color wheel. sometimes called contrasting colors because they make each other look brighter and more intense. When blue is used with orange the blue is bluer and the orange is stronger making a room bright and dramatic. Mixing complementary colors makes the color brown. If you add some of a colors compliment to it, you dull the color ( change the intensity ).
