- ACTs must abide by the rules and procedures of their certifying organization - failure to abide can result in disciplinary action and termination - "In Georgia, all athletic trainers must obtain a license from the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers to practice. Using the title or performing the duties of an athletic trainer without a license is a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature, regardless of certification status (GATA, 2019)"

- Galen and Hippocrates contributed a great deal to science and medicine --> first coaches and athletic trainers were for the Gladiators in ancient Rome - First Athletic Training Text Book: --> The Trainer's Bible (1917) Dr. S.E. Bilik - American Medical Association recognized athletic training as an allied health profession in 1991 --> allied professional contributes to or assists the professions of physical medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, and podiatry

- Hippocratic Oath --> "I will follow that system of regimen [use treatment to help the sick] which, according to my ability and judgement, I consider for the benefit of my patients. and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous [I will never use it to wrong them]" --> to treat the ill to the best of one's ability --> to preserve a patient's privacy --> to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation

- Liable: obligated according to law or equity; responsible - Athletic trainers take proper precautions to minimize exposure to lawsuits - Liability insurance is advisable

- National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) --> largest US certifying organization for ATCs --> formed in 1950 --> HQ: Dallas, TX --> 44,000+ members currently (2019) - Regional, state, and local trainers' associations --> promote athletic training, wellness, and safety of athletes at the local level --> Example: Georgia Athletic Trainers Association (GATA) - Southeastern Athletics Trainers Association (SEATA) - MARCH is National Athletic Training Month (sponsored by NATA)

- have bachelor's degree from accredited program (minimum) --> transitioning to entry-level Master's only by 2022 - study human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, athletic training, nutrition, and psychology/counseling - participate in extensive clinical experiences & continuing education

(NATABOC) examination --> Injury and Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion --> Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis --> Immediate and Emergency Response --> Therapeutic Intervention --> Health Care Administration and Professional Responsibility - Purpose: To establish standards for entry into the profession of athletic training
