When the objects separate, one of the objects can steal electrons from the other object, negatively charging the first object. The object that lost electrons becomes positively charged. These two objects now have different charge levels. An electrostatic discharge occurs when two objects with the different charge levels come together. If an object that has a high positive charge comes into contact with another object that has a high negative charge, the charge from the object with the higher electrical potential flows or jumps to the object with the lower potential. The result is an electrostatic shock.

Storage Spaces helps protect your data from drive failures and extend storage over time as you add drives to your PC. You can use Storage Spaces to group two or more drives together in a storage pool and then use capacity from that pool to create virtual drives called storage spaces. The threat of ESD begins when the fragile components (including the processor, hard drives, memory, motherboard, and expansion cards) inside the computer are exposed. You can cause damage simply by placing a fingertip too close to a component inside an open computer case. ESD charges can travel through wires and into components, where the wires can explode or fuse together, causing the components to fail. ESD can cause immediate failure of components or could gradually degrade components, causing only intermittent problems. It takes very little ESD to damage a component. A discharge of as little as 10 volts can damage a component, but 3,000 volts or more of ESD must occur before you can even feel it.

Your physical surroundings are another component of safety. Arrange the room that you work in to eliminate physical hazards. Use proper cable management and don't leave wires on the floor. Don't leave components in places where coworkers can trip over them. Be aware of personal safety for yourself and those around you.

Should you plug your monitor into a UPS as well?

here's an ongoing debate as to whether you should plug your monitor into your UPS as well. You can. But just be aware that it cuts down the estimated battery time because monitors draw a lot of power. It's not as big a deal today with LED and LCD monitors. But if you use a plasma monitor or a CRT monitor, be warned that they draw a lot of electrical power. The one thing that you should never, ever, connect to a protected power outlet on your UPS is a printer, especially a laser printer. That's because laser printers have heating elements that consume a huge amount of electricity and drain the UPS battery very quickly.
