Elastic Cartilage

auricle of ear and epiglottis; elastic fibers visible in matrix, branched and dark; supports but tolerates distortion without damage (will stretch and come back)

Hyaline Cartilage

covers bone ends, tips of ribs, larynx, trachea; no fibers observed in matrix, provides stiff but flexible support, reduces friction, bends with bones

Fibrocartilage

pads bend with vertebrae, knees, pubic bones, collagen fibers visible in matrix; resists compression, prevents bone to bone contact
