3rd grade SCIENCE chapter 2 - lesson 1- "How are animals grouped"

Ace your homework & exams now with Quizwiz!

What 4 things do all animals need to survive?

(WOFS) Water, Oxygen, Food and Shelter

A rattlesnake and a black widow spider are both poisonous. Why are they placed in different groups in this science chapter?

A rattlesnake has a backbone! (VERTEBRATE) A spider does NOT have a backbone! (INVERTEBRATE - ARTHROPOD)

What is the largest group of invertebrates? (Sea Jellies, Worms, Mollusks or Arthropods)

ARTHROPODS!

What does VERTEBRATE mean?

An animal with a backbone

Why are most invertebrates small in size compared to most vertebrates?

Because the hards shells or coverings on the outside of most invertebrates cannot support big animals.

What are the 5 main groups of vertebrates?

Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals

What does a sea jelly look like?

Has a long, soft body with stinging body parts.

What is the only group of vertebrates that feed milk to their babies?

MAMMALS!

How do amphibians breathe?

Most spend 1/2 their lives on land and 1/2 in water. Young amphibians mostly live in water and get oxygen (breathe) through their gills and through their smooth skin. As they grow older, they can develop lungs and breathe air!!

Do WORMS have legs?

No!

Do snakes use gills to breathe?

No! lungs.

Explain why reptiles and amphibians are not grouped together.

Reptiles have dry, scaly skin. They have Lungs. Amphibians have moist skin. This moist skin also helps them get oxygen. They can actually breathe through their skin!! Amphibians can breathe through gills, skin and can develop lungs to breathe air.

Are most invertebrates Small or Big?

SMALL!!

What are the 4 MAJOR kinds of invertebrate animals?

Sea Jellies, Worms, Mollusks, and Arthropods

What ONE type of invertebrate accounts for most of all the kinds of invertebrates!? What kind of invertebrate is this?

The INSECTS are the most!! They are known as arthropods. Check pie chart on page 42 in science book.

How do most fish breathe? Why?

Through their GILLS - because they live in water.

Think of 2 vertebrate animals that share a similar trait. Talk about what trait they share.

Up to you here:) 2 different types of animals that share the same trait.. define trait. (2 examples are given in textbook page 40.)--- maybe they can both fly? maybe they both don't have legs -- maybe they both feed their young milk -- etc. etc..

What is the body of a sea jelly mostly made of?

WATER!

Are amphibians Vertebrates?

YES!

Do birds use lungs to breathe?

YES!!

Do Arthopods have skeletons?

YES!! But outside their bodies!

Do Arthopods have legs?

YES!! With joints!

Give some examples of animals that are vertebrates.

cats, birds, fish and snakes

What 2 types of vertebrates use GILLS to breathe?

fish and amphibians

Name some examples of amphibians.

frogs, toads, salamanders

Give examples of Arthropods.

insects, spiders and crabs.

Are most animals vertebrates or invertebrates?

invertebrates...MANY MANY more!!

Why is hair important for birds and mammals?

keeps them warm

Birds and Mammals are also vertebrates! How do they breathe?

lungs!

Give some examples of Mollusks.

octopus, squid, clam and snail

What is an invertebrate animal?

one WITHOUT a backbone

Give a few examples of invertebrates.

sea stars, butterflies, spiders

Reptiles are Vertebrates too! Name some reptiles

snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles

What are the bodies like of Mollusks?

soft body and most have a hard shell.

How do reptiles breathe?

through their lungs

Are fish vertebrates?

yes!

Does a frog use gills to breathe?

yes!!
