Some areas in southern Alaska, such as the Gulf of Alaska islands, have summer temperatures ranging from 40°F to 60°F, (4°C to 15°C). Winter temperatures range from 20°F to 40°F (-6°C to 4°C). These areas also receive from 60 to 160 inches of rain every year. Other areas of Alaska get both rain and snow, such as in the Cordova-Valdez region. Altitudes range from 14,411 feet at Mt. Rainier, the highest point in the state, to sea level at the Pacific Ocean. Washington's major mountain ranges include the Olympic Mountains, Cascade Range, and Coeur d'Alene Mountains. From the rainforests in the Olympic Mountains on the Pacific coast, the land dips down to the Puget Sound. Major port cities on Puget Sound include Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia. The Cascades begin further east, dividing the state in half from north to south. The Columbia Plateau, a dry region made up of layers of ancient lava, stretches eastward from the Cascades. The Columbia River enters Washington from Canada and flows to the Pacific Ocean. Other major rivers include the Snake and the Yakima. CLIMATE: The Cascade Mountain range creates different climates in eastern and western Washington. In the west, winters are wet and mild and summers are cool. During the winter, temperatures range from 32°F to 40°F (0°C to 4°C) on the Pacific coast, while summer temperatures average around 60°F (15°C). In the east, winter temperatures range from 20°F to 30°F (-6°C to -1°C), but can drop below 0°F (-17°C). In the summer, temperatures fall between 65°F and 75°F (18°C and 23°C). The Olympic Mountains in the west receive 140 inches of rain and snow annually, more than any other part of the country. An average of 37 inches of rain falls in Seattle every year.
