Variable

A letter that represents an unknown number. An example is the y is the problem 27-2y

Constant

Any number because its value never changes. An example is the 3 in the problem 3-5x

Base

The BIG bottom number in an exponent. It is the number that is BEING MULTIPLIED. An example is the 3 in 3^4

Exponent

The LITTLE top number. It indicates how many times the base is being multiplied. An example is the 6 in 4^6

Coefficient

The number in front of the variable. It tells you how many variables you have. An example is the 6 in the problem 56+6i

Distributive property

The result obtained when a value is multiplied by another value. An example is 4(9x-2)

Substitute

To replace a variable in an algebraic expression with a know value or equation. A example is replacing x with 10 in the equation 72+2x

Expression

When there are a combination of variables, constants, and coefficients. An example is 27u+7-3y

Equation

When two things are equal to each other. (the right side to equal to the left side.) An example is 5+7=12

Like terms

When you have variables raised to the same power or exponent. An example is 5y+35y-7y
