Emancipation Proclamation: What was the goal, why would it occur, main points

- Goal- End slavery QUICKLY. If the CSA didn't rejoin the Union by 1/1/63 this proclamation would take effect. ○ Freed anyone in the states that had already seceded, it did not affect the enslaved people in the boarder states( MO, KY, WV, MD). ○ Didn't affect the Border States because he didn't want to anger them and have them join the CSA ○ He didn't have the authority to do this in the eyes of the citizens of the CSA ○ TURNING POINT- Changed the war's goal from preserving the Union to ending slavery and equality for all ○ If you were a foreign country you did NOT support the CSA because that was seen as you declaring that slavery was acceptable.

Gettysburg Address: what was going on and what were the main pts.

After the battle the government decided to create a National Military Cemetary there. ○ Lincoln was not originally supposed to speak. ○ He used it to address the American people about the significance of war. ○ Less than 2 min, but VERY memorable ○ This speech is considered to be his most famous speech of his presidency and one of the best speeches about democracy ever written ○ Declaration of Independence - Says ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL this helped him to write the Gettysburg Address!

Describe his final speech

April 11, 1865 given on the White House Lawn which was focused on RECONSTRUCTION of the Union. This was hard because a lot of people wanted the South to "pay" in many different ways for their actions

First Inaugural Address: when and what did he say

By the time he gave this speech, 7 states had already left the Union. Country was on the brink of war. ○ Said he wanted to "Preserve, protect and defend the US Government" and if a war began it would be because the South started it

Second Inaugural Address: purpose and goal

Different purpose for this speech- He knew the Union was about to win. This told people to not have ill will towards the South. Goal = lasting peace, no punishment for the South

House Divided: When did he give it and the main pts.

He gave this speech while running for Senate for the 2nd time ○ Our country could not endure HALF SLAVE AND HALF FREE ○ Said only the Federal Government had the power to end slavery. ○ Said he wouldn't end slavery where it already existed ■ Goal of this was to PRESERVE the Union.

Political Leadership

He was a leader with great integrity and strong principles. He could compromise but he would not waver his beliefs about his core principles. Wonderful speaker
