- person's need to be protected from actual or potential harm and to have freedom from fear - assurance that one is out of danger

Self Esteem needs

- the need for a person to feel good about oneself, to feel pride and a sense of accomplishment, and to believe that others also respect and appreciate those accomplishments. - striving for competence in order to gain approval & recognition

Self Actualization needs

- the need to be the best one can be - self fulfillment - at the top of Maslow's hierarchy
