When and where did Abraham live?

- Born in ancient Sumer (later Babylon and today Iraq) in the city of Ur - In the 1800 BCE -But because of his brother's death, it caused the occasion for the family's first move to northern Mesopotamia - Age 75, Abraham and his family was commanded by God to leave Mesopotamia and settle in the land of Canaan (the great nation of Palestine)

When did he die? What was the legacy of Abraham's life?

- He lived to 175 years and just 15 years before Isaac married - He passed the great land to Isaac and Isaac passed it to his son, Jacob (also known as Israel) - He controlled an unknown quantity of land west of the southern half on the Dead Sea - He began with very little and to have became the leader of a large extended family wealthy enough to have hundreds of servants in his employ

Why is he important?

- in the Bible, he receives the promise that God with make of him a great nation through which all people will be blessed - It says in the Bible, " Go forth from your native land and from your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation" (Gen. 12:1-2)

Who is Abraham?

- looked upon as the founding father of the Jewish people and founder of Judaism - biblical figure in the book of Genesis in the Jewish Bible (Torah) - He was born into a heathen family (people who don;t know God) Abraham was married to Sarah (his half-sister)

What is an important event in Abraham's life?

-God promised Abraham and Sarah a child (Isaac) - During Isaac's youth, God tested Abraham's faith by ordering him to sacrifice Isaac -He did what he was ordered - He started his journey to the mountain to build an altar - At the last-minute, God sent an angle to tell him that God provided a last-minute substitute in the form of a ram - Abraham got to enjoy the rest of life
