asthmatic pt's smooth muscles in airway are hyperresponsive to stimuli resulting in bronchospasm and inflammation during an asthma attack, histamines and prostaglandins are released Activation of beta2-adrenergic receptors would = bronchodilation potential asthma triggers: air pollution, allergens, chemicals & food, URI's, stress, exercise, weather to avoid acute asthma attacks, pt should avoid dust pollen and mold cold air can trigger an acute attack short-acting bronchodilator should be used during acute attack sudden airway hyperresponsive to stimuli? asthma attack

Drug/Drug Contraindications for albuterol? Beta blockers -inhibit albuterol's bronchodilation effect monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for 14 days after beginning albuterol therapy ((risk for hypertensive crisis))

not contraindicated: corticosteroids leukotriene modifier (singulair) mast cell stabilizer
