AFDA VOCABULARY
Dependent
A dependent variable is a variable whose value depends upon independent variable s. The dependent variable is what is being measured in an experiment or evaluated in a mathematical equation. The dependent variable is sometimes called "the outcome variable."
Slope of horizontal line
A horizontal line is one the goes left-to-right, parallel to the x-axis of the coordinate plane. All points on the line will have the same y-coordinate. In the figure above, drag either point and note that the line is horizontal when they both have the same y-coordinate. A horizontal line has a slope of zero. What are the ordered pairs of this line?
Line Of Best Fit
A line of best fit is a straight line drawn through the center of a group of data points plotted on a scatter plot. Scatter plots depict the results of gathering data on two variables. Is the line of best fit in this graph positive or negative?
Multiply
A mathematical operation performed on a pair of numbers in order to derive a third number called a product. For positive integers, multiplication consists of adding a number (the multiplicand) to itself a specified number of times. Thus multiplying 6 by 3 means adding 6 to itself three times. What is the answer to the question in the picture?
Ordered Pair
A pair of elements a, b having the property that ( a, b) = (u, v ) if and only if a = u, b = v.
Quotient
A result obtained by dividing one quantity by another.
Equation
A statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =).
Transformation
A transformation is a general term for four specific ways to manipulate the shape of a point, a line, or shape. The original shape of the object is called the pre-image and the final shape and position of the object is the image under the transformation. What does a transformation look like and how is it created?
Slope of vertical line
A vertical line is one the goes straight up and down, parallel to the y-axis of the coordinate plane. All points on the line will have the same x-coordinate. In the figure above, drag either point and note that the line is vertical when they both have the same x-coordinate. A vertical line has no slope. What are the ordered pairs of this line?
Addition
Addition is finding the total, or sum, by combining two or more numbers. Example: 5 + 11 + 3 = 19 is an addition. Drag the numbers to the two blue boxes see how addition works: Drag the numerals to the blue boxes. Answer the following question.
Liner Equation
An equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph. How do you set up a liner Equation?
Undefined
An expression in mathematics which does not have meaning and so which is not assigned an interpretation. Is undefined a vertical or horizontal line?
Inequalities
An inequality is like an equation that uses symbols for "less than"(<) and "greater than"(>) where an equation uses a symbol for "is equal to" (=). Solve this Inequality.
Negative Slope
Definition of Negative Slope Lines. A line with a negative slope is a line that is trending downward from left to right. In other words, the line's rise to run ratio is a negative value. What is the slope value of this graph?
Laws of exponents
Definition of law of exponents. : one of a set of rules in algebra: exponents of numbers are added when the numbers are multiplied, subtracted when the numbers are divided, and multiplied when raised by still another exponent: am×aⁿ=am+n; am÷aⁿ=am−n; (am)ⁿ=amn.
Percents
Definition: A percent is a ratio whose second term is 100. Percent means parts per hundred. The word comes from the Latin phrase per centum, which means per hundred. In mathematics, we use the symbol % for percent What percentage of the pentagon is not shaded in?
Divide
Division is splitting into equal parts or groups. It is the result of "fair sharing". Example: there are 12 chocolates, and 3 friends want to share them, how do they divide the chocolates? Answer: They should get 4 each.
Domain
Domain is the Y values of a ordered pair Find the Domain of the graph.
Set Notation
Example: {5, 7, 11} is a set. But we can also "build" a set by describing what is in it. Here is a simple example of set-builder notation: It says "the set of all x's, such that x is greater than 0". In other words any value greater than 0.
Standard form
For numbers it means "Expanded Form" (such as 125 = 100+20+5), but in Britain it means "Scientific Notation" • For equations it means the form: (some expression) = 0. • For a quadratic equation it means the form: ax2 + bx + c. And there are more. Standard Form. Solve when (X)=5 and (N)= 2
Mode
If no number in the list is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.
Input (X)
In mathematics, a function is a relation between a set of ? and a set of permissible outputs with the property that each input is related to exactly one output.
Independent
Independent variable definition. An independent variable is a variable that represents a quantity that is being manipulated in an experiment. A dependent variable represents a quantity whose value depends on those manipulations.
Inverse
Mathematically, inverse operations are opposite operations. Addition is the opposite of subtraction; division is the opposite of multiplication, and so on. Inverse operations are used to solve simple algebraic equations to more difficult equations that involve exponents, logarithms, and trigonometry.
Scatter plot
Scatter Plot. more ... A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data. In this example, each dot represents one person's weight versus their height. Scatter (XY) Plots.
Subtraction
Subtraction is a mathematical operation that represents the operation of removing objects from a collection. It is signified by the minus sign (−). For example, in the picture on the right, there are 5 − 2 apples—meaning 5 apples with 2 taken away, which is a total of 3 apples. What is the answer to the question shown?
Mean
The "mean" is the "average" you're used to, where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers.
Range
The answer to the question above this set is (-4,5) Range is the X value of a ordered pair List all of the ranges for the data.
Positive Slope
The meaning isn't much different. Slope is simply how much the graph of a line changes in the vertical direction over a change in the horizontal direction. Because of this, the slope is sometimes referred to as the rate of change. ... A positive slope moves upward on a graph from left to right. What is the slope value of this graph?
Slope
The steepness of a graph What is the slope of this graph?
Median
To find the Median, place the numbers you are given in value order and find the middle number. Example: find the Median of {13, 23, 11, 16, 15, 10, 26}. Put them in order: {10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 23, 26} The middle number is 15, so the median is 15. (If there are two middle numbers, you average them.)
Output (Y)
When you put something in you get something out. What is the word for out?
Exponents
a quantity representing the power to which a given number or expression is to be raised, usually expressed as a raised symbol beside the number or expression What is the answer to the question in the picture?
