Step 1 overview PS

Problem solving is an approach to dealing with issues in life and coming up with solutions to the problems

Potential ss situation: can't you just tell me what to do

I can't tell you what to do, the goal of this is for you to be able to generate these alternatives and develop these PS skills so you can do them independently. I am more of a guide in this situiaton

Step 3 overview how to problem solve

Problem solving is a 5 step process that the T and the client will collaborate on together. It includes the client's specific problem, coming up with alternatives, eliminating a few, then making a pros/cons list for the remaining. The client will pick one, implement it and reevaluate if it created the desired outcome

Evaluating alternatives

of the 6, have the client pick three, "which one of these seems likes ones you would like to explore further?", reject the others. Then make a pros and cons list for each of the last alternatives, the client should be the one making these ideas

Picking an option

once the pros and con's lists have been made, ask the client for a Plan A and a Plan B "what is the best option for you?" once Plan A and B has been picked, apply them to the situation, "how would you do this?" is the person able to carry them out, what factors could be preventing this (can role play if necessary)

Potential ss situation: multiple problems

start with the one that the client feels is most pressing

Step 2 overview PS

PS is an essential skill to learn, it helps ss learn to do PS skills independently, learn when to expect problems in the future, understand why problems happen and prevent them while learnng coping skills

Potential ss situation: can I write?

The clinician is going to write so the client can focus on brainstorming only, they are welcome to look at the notes though

Defining the problem in PS

if it is indv focused - ask what the client is doing? out of control - what is occurring make to sure to define all aspects of the situation operationally

Take action

implement the solution, at the next session ask how it went, and ask for self-montioring: what happened, what did you do, how did it go and how did it feel

Generating solutions via brainstorming

open the space up for the client to generate 6 potential solutions. this is done via brainstorming: nonjudgmental, there are no bad ideas type situation. the clinician writes down the alternatives "now that we have a clear picture of the problem, let's think of some solutions, think of as many as possible and we can go through them"

Potential ss situation: my problem can't be solved

think of a time you solved a problem, it may seem less daunting as we start to go through the process

Potential ss situation: ss can't think of any solutions

tell them to just put down an option, no matter how silly or unrealistic, never know if you can use it or not
