SYMPTOMS OF ALLERGIES In the previous slide, we talked about allergic reactions and how they produce a chemical called histamine. This chemical will produce reactions to the body known as symptoms. Here are a few examples: Sneezing, wheezing, and coughing are apart of the response from the respiratory system. Nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal problems are the result of a food allergy. Congestion, itching, dripping of the nose, and watery eyes occur during an allergic rhinitis. Flaky, itchy, and red skin are the result of eczema. When experiencing hives, you develop itchy red bumps on your skin.

What are Allergies? Allergies are a damaging immune reaction by the body to a substance, especially pollen, fur, medication, a particular food, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive. An allergen is any substance that can cause an allergic reaction. This usually refers to common items, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, milk, peanuts, wheat, pets or insect stings. When someone is experiencing an allergic reaction, the immune system identifies the allergen as a foreign invader and attacks. The attacking causes a release of chemicals called histamines. Histamines is the substance that will produce reactions to the body.
