What are Allergies? Allergies are a damaging immune reaction by the body to a substance, especially pollen, fur, medication, a particular food, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive. An allergen is any substance that can cause an allergic reaction. This usually refers to common items, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, milk, peanuts, wheat, pets or insect stings. When someone is experiencing an allergic reaction, the immune system identifies the allergen as a foreign invader and attacks. The attacking causes a release of chemicals called histamines. Histamines is the substance that will produce reactions to the body.
