Do you think there are any drawbacks to measuring an IQ of a person?
IQ tests are not always accurate. An IQ score can also cause people to be stereotyped and treated differently based on their score.
Why can measuring intelligence be helpful?
Measuring intelligence can predict someone's performance in school and work. People with low scores can receive the help and accommodations they need to succeed and people with high scores can discover their full potential.
Compare and contrast the benefits of the Stanford-Binet IQ test and Wechsler's IQ tests.
The Wechsler-Bellevue IQ test combined subtests that tested verbal and nonverbal skills into a single IQ test in order to get a more reliable score. While the Stanford-Binet test was normed and standardized, it focused more on verbal skills than other cognitive functions.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of standardizing and normalizing an intelligence test?
The advantage of standardizing and normalizing an intelligence test is that scores are more reliable. The disadvantage is that scores are more varied.
standard deviation
describe how data are dispersed in a population and give context to large data sets.
intelligence quotient (IQ)
describes a score earned on a test designed to measure intelligence
norming
involves giving a test to a large population so data can be collected comparing groups, such as age groups. The resulting data provide norms, or referential scores, by which to interpret future scores.
Flynn Effect
the Flynn effect refers to the observation that each generation has a significantly higher IQ than the last.
standardizing
the manner of administration, scoring, and interpretation of results is consistent
Intellectual Disability Subtype 1. Mild 2. Moderate 3. Severe 4. Profound
1. 3rd- to 6th-grade skill level in reading, writing, and math; may be employed and live independently 2. Basic reading and writing skills; functional self-care skills; requires some oversight 3. Functional self-care skills; requires oversight of daily environment and activities 4. May be able to communicate verbally or nonverbally; requires intensive oversight
What is the average IQ score? What is the standard deviation for IQ scores?
The average IQ score is 100. The standard deviation is 15.
Why is a bell curve used to measure intelligence?
The bell curve is used to measure intelligence because it depicts a normal distribution of traits.
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V),
These tests are used widely in schools and communities throughout the United States, and they are periodically normed and standardized as a means of recalibration.
Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale
Wechsler combined several subtests from other intelligence tests used between 1880 and World War I. These subtests tapped into a variety of verbal and nonverbal skills.
bell curve
a graph in the general shape of a bell, the graph demonstrates a normal distribution of a trait,
representative sample
a subset of the population that accurately represents the general population.
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale
a test that consists of a series of items that vary according to the age of the person being tested
