Applied Research Midterm Chp 3
Identify which of the ethical principles were violated in the Humphreys tearoom study.
He violated just about each principle. These participants were not voluntary because they did not know they were being studied, he did not keep anything in confidence because he would follow them home to ask questions and harm them emotionally, was not 100% clear on the study.
Compare the positions on the issues that social science can (or cannot) and should (or should not) be separated from politics.
-Ethics deals mostly with methods used in research -politics deals with the substance and use of research. -there are no formal codes of accepted political conduct. -politics=outcome 1. science is not untouched by politics 2. science proceeds in the midst of political controversy and hostility (research can still go on without government funding) 3. awareness of ideologies enriches the study and practice of social research methods. 4. while researchers should not let their values interfere with their research, this does not mean that researchers should not express both their scientific expertise and personal values.
Describe the role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
-IRB: review research proposals involving humans so they can guarantee the rights and interests are protected -group of professionals making sure rights are being protected
Describe and illustrate the ethical issues involved in: voluntary participation, no harm to subjects, anonymity and confidentiality, the researchers identity, and reporting.
1. Voluntary Participation; Informed Consent: subjects in a study must base their voluntary participation on a full understanding of the possible risks involved. 2. No harm to participants: whether it is physical or emotional 3. Anonymity and confidentiality; anything will be held in confidence. Unless you may harm yourself or others. Anonymity: the researcher cannot identify a given response with a given respondent; get a participant ID # and name cannot be traced back to the #. Confidentiality: researcher can identify a given person's responses but promises not to do so publicly; IRB makes sure respondents answers are protected. 4. Deception must be justified by compelling scientific concerns. 5. Researchers must be honest about their findings and research. (natural behavior, must tell true reason before leaving study, can't elaborate on findings)
Identify which of the ethical principles were violated in the Milgram shock study.
They were not told the true reason behind the study, harmed them emotionally by learning something bad about themselves, causing some to commit suicide.
