Color has how many main characteristics ?

3

Shape

A closed line. Shapes can be geometric, like squares and circles; or organic, like free-form or natural shapes. Shapes are flat and can express length and width. They are two dimensional.

What is color for an artist ?

A communication tool

Contour lines

A method of drawing in which one only draws outlines of an object with ought using shading

Black is the __________ of light

Absence

How long has the term abstract art been used?

Abstract Art has been around for well over 100 years. Some say that "abstractions" started with the cave paintings thousands of years ago.

Forms

Are 3- dimensional, expressing length, width, and depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes, and pyramids are forms.

Tertiary colors

Are created by adding more of one primary color than yellow-GREEN red-PURPLE red-ORANGE

Secondary colors

Are created by mixing 2 primary colors together on a color wheel, you'll find the secondary colors between 2 primary colors green purple orange

Examples of rhythm

Broadway Boogie Woogie (Pier Mondrian)- creates feeling of a busy street/city Pollock- feeling of chaos, ppl dancing

What can color do ?

Effectively communicate mood or emotion

Mechanical lines

Express rigid control

TRUE/FALSE forms are 2-dimensional

False. They are 3-dimensional

Examples of pattern

Fish&Swans-enhances movement, repetition, investigate/look over painting Tree- repetition, swirls • notice it once you recognize the initial pattern Brito- several pattern&contrast that gets eye moving, color

Intensity

How bright or dull the color is

Value

How light or dark the color is

What three art movements began to show the first signs of abstraction?

Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Cubism - All three helped to establish that art could be non- representative

What do shapes express

Length and width

What do forms express?

Length, width, depth

What is the foundation of all drawing ?

Line

Examples of emphasis

Man with a white shirt on- brightest color in painting, all guns facing him, light shining on him, hands in the air Sun- brightest color, only geometrical shape in painting Rose(Picasso)- only red/warm color- makes you look at mom and baby

Examples of balance

Man with apple face(René Magreet)-same amount of black, grey and whit, blue bar, dressed the same on both sides symmetrically balanced Cow skull- slight differences, symmetrically balanced Fruits and pitcher- asymmetrical symmetry through the color green, the fruit, 2 objects about the same height that make up a triangle & background makes up 2 triangles

Examples of contrast

Marilyn Monroe(Andy Warhol)- uses silk screening to create contrasts in color Blue dog (rodrigue)- contrast of yellow eyes to blue to red/orange background

Examples of unity

Numbers- unity thru numbers in the same size rectangle & colors Fish- fish are focal point, unity thru greenery/foliage & shapes (circles, ovals)& rather color pink Big Family- unity thru the figures being similar in features & exaggerated proportions(fat/bigger), they are all playing an instrument/moving, limitation of color (blue, brown, yellow, black) focal point- lady- lightest color, arms lifted up

The ways that artists can create the illusion of space on a flat, 2-d surface

Object size difference overlap perspective

Object size difference

Objects closest to the viewer appear LARGER. Objects farther away appear smaller in the "distance"

Complementary colors

Opposite on color wheel, provide visual tension, make things stand out

Examples of proportion

Overview of city (Piet Mondrian)- point of emphasis-red square(only red, largest shape) all other colors and shapes are proportional to each other, yellows are diagonal, black lines settle it

What kind of light is white

Pure light

What is the difference between scale and proportion?

Scale- comparing two objects Proportion- comparing things within a single object

Line can suggest what?

Shape, pattern ,form, structure, growth, depth, distance, rhythm, movement, and a range of emotions

Analogous colors

Sit next to each other on the color wheel. They create subtle and relaxed visions

Response to horizontal lines

Suggest distance and calm

Response to vertical lines

Suggest height and strength

Response to diagonal lines

Suggest movement

Freehand lines

Suggest the personal energy and mood of the artist

Response to jagged lines

Suggest turmoil and anxiety

Visual texture

Texture that can be perceived by the way something looks

Textile texture

Texture you can feel by touching object/surface

Examples of variety

The Scream- variety of human proportions, color, line variety Random thingy- variety of shape, line

Space

The area between and around objects. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is 3-dimensional; in visual art, when we create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space

Color

The light reflected off of objects.

Hue

The name of the color ex) red

Primary colors

The ones we need to make all other colors red yellow blue

Movement

The path the viewer's eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

What is positive space ?

The space an object occupies

What is negative space ?

The space around objects

Texture

The surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough of smooth, soft or hard. Textures don't always feel the way they look. ex) porcupine drawing

TRUE/FALSE shapes are 2-dimensional

True

Gestural lines

Types of lines used in drawing quick representations of an object or movement. They are loosely drawn

Perspective

Using points in the horizon to create the illusion of distance.

Examples of movement

Wave- visual art/leads eye in direction of wave Untitled-The Dance(Keith Haring)- through the lines, position of ppl, color(high contrast) Starry night- wind lines, short lines around stars to create twinkling horizon glimmer effect, contrasting colors (blue and black) Jackson Pollock- lot going on(eye forced to investigate), color, only way to produce painting is by moving

Overlap

When one object covers part of another object

Examples of repetition

Working man(Rene Magreet)-uses repetition in a lot of his work including the "working men"- a bunch of men seen(dark overcoat with bowler hat-repetition Vasili Candinski- repetition in squares, colors, and circles Warhol converse

Line

a mark with greater length than width. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin

Abstract Art

art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.

Thin lines

can express delicacy

Thick lines

can express strength

Broken lines

can express the ephemeral or the insubstantial

Continuous lines

can lead the eye in certain directions

Rhythm

is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm created a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting & active, variety is essential. • pattern creates rhythm

Pattern

is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art

Scale

relative size of object to another Spoon bridge with a cherry- large spoon and cherry

Response to curved lines

suggest comfort and ease

contrast

the difference in values, colors, textures, and other elements

Balance

the distribution of the visual weight of the objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the events used on one side of the deign are similar to those kn the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar

Unity

the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.

Proportion

the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts or number)relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size it the head compared to the rest of the body.

Emphasis

the part of the design that catches the viewer's attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

Variety

the use of several elements of design to hold the viewers attention and to guide the viewers este through and around the work of art.

Repetition

works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
