They eventually cut the tow rope, leaving the immigrants to drift under the sun of the equator for twelve days without food or water, and sufferiing a lot of torment. Only fifteen of them lived.The painting created a sensation because of the graphic treatment of the subject matter and the political implications. Gériccault portrayed the most dramatic moment in the painting, the point at which the survivors regain hope of rescue. Using painting devices to capture their desperate situation.In terms of compostion, he divided into two overlapping triangles. He tried to convey the impression of motions by contrasting the postures of the figures. One of his triangles was one of depair and one was of hope, and he used transitional figures in order to add unity and balance to the painting.In order to portray a menacing mood, he painted the storm clouds and cresting waves dark.
