What does cognitive dissonance mean, and how is it relevant to attitudes (changing attitudes)

- Cognitive dissonance: tension is created when an individual's behavior is inconsistent with his or her thoughts and beliefs. This tension then motivates an individual to make an attitude change that would produce consistency between thoughts and behaviors

Related to one's global attitude disposition, there are people with good attitudes (positive) and bad attitudes (negative) and all those in between. So what? What impact does this have and may it not have?

- if someone around you has a bad attitude it can easily impact how you feel. When people have good attitudes there is less conflict and things tend to go smoothly.

What does it mean to describe attitude as a global disposition?

Global Disposition- tendency to think, act, or feel in certain ways. How pessimistic or optimistic are you? We care because it can affect work performance

Define the three types of job related attitudes.

Job satisfaction: positive emotions about their job, satisfied with salary, bonuses, benefits etc. Job involvement: how closely an individual is linked with their job, how active they engage in the job, their job enhances their self-worth Organizational Commitment: high level of loyalty of employees toward their organization, aspires to remain a member of org

Power Distance- extent to which we value a greater power distance/ other countries have lower power distance but want more say and power. Individualism/Collectivism-Individualism: focuses on the individual. Collectivism: focuses on family and groups. US-individual Collectivism: South American Countries. Uncertainty avoidance- avoid uncertainty and change, low uncertainty avoidance - allow uncertainty, push out into the unknown. US- low uncertainty avoidance High uncertainty avoidance- china, Asia Masculinity-value of possession, accumulation, materialism. Femininity- relationships, quality of life not just work. US - quantity/ European - Quality Long Term/Short term orientation- LT: patience, perseverance. ST: achieve and accomplish in short term. US - short term, people in US will change careers 2-3 times. Asia/china: long term, loyalty, stay with 1 company forever

Relate to ourselves: Self Awareness: recognizing and understanding your emotions, appreciating how they affect those around you. Ex: if you are self aware, you know how you're feeling, acting, and how you appear. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses will help you be a better leader bc you understand what skills you are missing and what you need from others. Self regulation: ability to remain calm in emotionally trying situations. Ex: would want to be self regulated as a firefighter so you don't panic and pass out Self motivation: your drive to improve and achieve: setting high standards for yourself and working consistently towards your goals. The Chung Family went to sea for a better future, they valued the idea of safety, freedom and building a better life. Gen Y, Millennials:(1980-2000) everyone's a winner, special, schedule, praise them, does what is expected of them and nothing more and expects praise Gen Z:(2001-now) "digital natives", never not had electronics, values electronics, values diversity- welcome and acceptive of diversity. attitudes are composed of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. If someone has previous experience of a situation, they will view it much differently (or have a different attitude) than someone with no experience

Why should companies care about differences in people's values or generational values?

because our values and generation values impact individuals behavior and performance. Having a diverse group of employees can give us different perspectives on the decisions of the company
