Ch. 1.2
molecule
bonded collection of two or more atoms of the same or different elements
mixture
matter that can be separated into its components by physical means
homogeneous mixture
(also, solution) combination of substances with a composition that is uniform throughout
heterogeneous mixture
combination of substances with a composition that varies from point to point (italian dressing - can see the differences in oil, herbs and water)
How does an element differ from a compound? How are they similar?
element is composed of a single atom, compound is a pure substance that can be broken down into different elements. they both have atoms
mass
fundamental property of matter (anything that takes up space and has mass)
How does a heterogeneous mixture differ from a homogeneous mixture? How are they similar?
heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures that you can see the different compounds in them, homogeneous mixtures are mixtures that have different compounds in them but are not visible. they both have different mixtures or compounds in them.
pure substance
homogeneous substance that has a constant composition
compound
pure substance that can be decomposed into two or more elements
atom
smallest particle of an element that can enter into a chemical combination
element
substance that is composed of a single type of atom; a substance that cannot be decomposed by a chemical change
