What was the Great Awakening?
It was a religious movement that brought together people of different beliefs.

Philadelphia (p. 251)
A city in southeastern Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River; a major United States port. Its name means "brotherly love;" Philadelphia was founded on the idea that people of diverse backgrounds could live peacefully together.
How did religious toleration help attract people of different cultures to the Middle Colonies?
A mix of people from various cultures came to the Middle Colonies because they knew they would find religious freedom and better opportunities there.
What were two effects of the Great Awakening?
Changed the way that many people practiced their religion. Also it helped bring people together, which led to greater religious toleration.
What were some of the ways in which Benjamin Franklin improved the city of Philadelphia?
He raised money for the first hospital. He founded the first library and the first college, and he organized a militia.
Why did immigrants come to the Middle Colonies?
Immigrants came to escape war, for religious freedom, and for better opportunities.

The first Jewish synagogue was built here in 1730. Their social life was as diverse as their religious beliefs. They had dances, plays, concerts, social clubs, horse races, bowling, sleigh rides, and ice skating.
How did the Middle Colonies differ from the New England Colonies?
There were many different religious groups in the Middle Colonies. Pennsylvania was first colony to protest slavery. Social life was a diverse depending on where they lived.
