What is a Convection Current?

A convection current is the flow that transfers heat with in a fluid. Heating and cooling of the fluid, changes in the fluid density, and the force of gravity, combine to set convection currents in motion. Heat from the core and the mantle itself cause convection currents in the mantle. Convection currents take place in the core and the mantle.

What is density?

Density is a measure of how much mass there is in a volume of a substance.

Why do less dense substances rise?

Gravity pulls everything towards the center of the earth. Denser material is pulled harder causing less dense material to rise.
