Mentoring Moment: Theory X and Theory Y According to behavioral scientist Douglas McGregor, your management style is strongly influenced by your beliefs and assumptions about what motivates your subordinates. He classified these beliefs into two sets of assumptions that he labeled Theory X and Theory Y. Managers who subscribe to Theory X tend to believe that people are naturally lazy, lack ambition, and must be either punished or rewarded to be made productive. **Expectancy Theory**
