Blood, Sweat and Tears

A band formed by Al Kooper. They maintained a strong brass oriented sound due to Kooper's liking of jazz and rock. The first version of the band included two trumpeters who also played the flugelhorn and a trombonist who also played on a recorder. Other instrumentalists include an alto saxist, a keyboardist who is also a flutist, trombonist and a guitarist, bassist and drummer. They were a New York band that played music by many of the city is best known writers. They also played arrangements of classic songs like Billie holiday's ballad "God bless the child". Cooper left after the first album and was replaced by David Clayton Thomas. A bluesy singer. They recorded the "spinning wheel". David Clayton Thomas left the group for a couple of years but came back.

Crescendo

A gradual increase in loudness or volume level.

Jazz Rock

A rock style that includes a horn section somewhat like that of a jazz band but smaller.

Trading Twos

A term for a type of improvisation used especially by jazz muscians in which two or more musicians take turns improvising on two or four bar sections of music.

Charlie Daniels Band

Great imitator of the Allman Brothers band which copied twin guitar and drums sound. Daniels was an eclectic Country musician who played hillbilly fertile fiddle, electric guitar, and slide guitar. His song "the souths gonna do it (again)" exemplified the southern part of the entire southern rock movement as well as any piece of music could. He included with lyrics the names of many well known performers. In the music Daniel included southern musical styles, both black and white origin, including hillbilly, honky-tonk, boogie-woogie, and the blues different styles were brought up in different parts of the recording. He would organize an annual concert in Nashville called the volunteer jam concert. His most popular recording was "the devil went down to Georgia". He would make political statements in his songs but he was conservative not liberal. He recorded and toured into the 90s and express his opinion on Vietnam veterans treatment, bringing drug dealers to criminal justice and other subjects. The door was his first gospel album and he made guest appearances with contemporary artists.

Lynyrd Skynyrd

He captured the national rock audience. They're actually named after one of their high school teachers who criticized them for their long hair. They're from Jacksonville Florida and they played hard rock music with the Allman brother bands characteristic twin lead guitar sound which they turned into a triple. The first album was pronounced Leh-nerd skin-nerd which includes "freebird" to honor Duane allman. They wrote "sweet home Alabama" and "southern man." To boo Alabama is Governor George Wallace. And in October 1977 when leaving a show in South Carolina on the way to Louisiana their plane crashed killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and his sister back up vocalist Kathy Gaines and badly injuring other bandmembers. The living members formed the band The Rossingtons-Collins Band and re-recorded free bird without vocals as a tribute to Ronnie Van Zant. Surviving members included guitarist Gary Rossington and Ed King keyboardist Billy Powell bass player Leon Wilkeson and drummer Artimus Pyle, which formed a new version of the band with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant as lead singer and new member Randall Hall on guitar and piano back up singers Rossington and Carol Bristow. Another original member Alan Collins made appearances but suffered an automobile accident. They released the album legend which included several B sides of old singles and recordings left unfinished by original band. Allen Collins died in 1998 but the rest of the revival band continue to work until the middle 90s. Johnny Van Zant also had success as a solo artist. They once again together recorded the album God and guns .

Gram Parsons

He wrote songs and play the guitar with the international submarine band until 1968 when he joined the byrds. He convinced them to do a country album. They mixed country with rock and recorded the album sweetheart of the rodeo. He left the birds after refusing to tour in south Africa. He opposed apartheid. He and Chris Hillman formed the flying burrito Brothers which included country Timbre of pedal steel guitar. A strong back beat and rock and Everly brother influenced vocal harmonies. He quit the burrito Brothers and was joined by Harris on his solo album JP and grievous angel. Exposure from Harris through her appearances on this artist albums influenced her career in country rock. He died in 1973 but cause of death was never established. Many tribute songs and covers have been done for him.

Chicago

In Chicago in 1967 guitarist/singer Terry Kath and clarinetist/socks phone is Walter Parazaider formed a jazz rock band called the big thing. It consisted of a horn section which had a trumpet, trombone and saxophone. It also had a rhythm section which had guitar, keyboard, bass and drums. Most of the members were also singers and group vocals were featured in recordings by them. Their name was Chicago Transit Authority before they changed it because of objections from city officials. The early recordings captured the energy of the jazz band as well as the spontaneous parts of a jazz band. They had jazz styled improvisations by individual group members but eventually they recorded more of a pop style and released the album Chicago XXX. Singer/keyboard player Al Cooper had recorded with the royal teens during the late 50s and played with Bob Dylan and was a member of the blues project. Cooper liked the idea of combining rock and jazz instruments so he formed his own band.

Electric Flag

Is the earliest of jazz rock bands formed in San Francisco by Michael Bloomfield who had played with Paul Butterfield blues band in Chicago the year before and singer Nick gravenites. They consisted of a rhythm section that included keyboard, bass, and drums, a horn section that included trumpet, saxophone (a tenor and a baritone). They had several personal changes and disbanded after only one year and a half together but their commercial success influenced musicians to create their own jazz rock bands.

Creedence Clearwater Revival

John and Tom for a gritty took rock music and put it with country or rockabilly guitar Phils and country in Florence lyrics to create their own kind of country rock. They did not have set up based an acoustic rhythm guitar sound of country but they managed to capture the energy of rockabilly. They covered "Suzie Q" but most of their songs were written by John Fogerty. Country lyrical themes that stress southern love for landscape and personal pride in the face of heart economic conditions were on the song in "born on the bayou" "Green river" "fortunate son" and "down on the corner." Country styles are also heard in their live concert rabbits were like "tombstone shadow" withwith its country guitar feels and "don't look now" with country guitar 2 beat baselines. They reformed as creedence Clearwater revisited and were successful.

Eagles

Linda Ronstadt sang many different styles. For her country album Linda Ronstadt which included guitarist/singer Glenn Frey, guitar/banjo/mandolin player and singer Bernie Leadon, bass player/singer Randy Meisner, and drummer/singer Don Henley. They formed this band. They became one of the most important and successful country rock band out of Southern California. They played a fusion of country and rock music. The recording "take it easy" used a rock beat but the sound of a five string banjo playing continuously in the background. The played the acoustic guitar on the record "best of my love" which was made to sound like folk rock but had electric guitars that were country style. "Lyin' eyes" was rock music with country timbers electric bass, electric guitar feels, honky-tonk piano, and mandolin. They also had storyline lyrics. The Eagles biggest hit was a "lyin' eyes". They changed direction when Bernie Leadon quit and was replaced by rock guitarist Joe Walsh. They recorded "hotel California" and of "life in the fast lane". They broke up to allow Frey and Henley to pursue solo careers but regrouped with Frey, Henley, Walsh, and Timothy Schmidt. They released the album long road out of Eden.

Allman Brothers Band

Play music that combine elements of blues, soul, and country. They moved from their home in Florida to Georgia to record at Capricorn records studio. The two lead guitarist Duane Allman and Richard dickey Betts, and two drummers Johansson and trucks gave the group a distinctive sound. The twin guitars created a thick full sound. And the song "trouble no more" written by Muddy Waters from the groups first album had the introduction and some guitar fills in the instrumental choruses featured the 2 lead guitars playing in octaves. And other instrumental sections of the recording the two lead guitarist used a trading twos technique. They weren't typical country lines were closer to blues. Tween Allman died in a motorcycle accident. Eat a peach contain three tracks I've been booed recorded before it rains death but for the remainder of the album the twin lead sound was changed to that of a single lead guitar. They hired chuck Leavelle to play keyboard so that almond could join dickey Betts on the guitar. Other guitarist were added so that Greg Allman concentrate on keyboard. "Rambling man" was a song from the album brothers and sisters. Legal and personal problems cause the band break up and pursue solo careers. They reappeared for an album called in late and rugs. But the reunion did not last.

Mode

ZZ Top

Texas's best power trio that built a career that lasted beyond most southern bands. Guitarist/singer Billy Gibbons had played with the psychedelic band called moving sidewalks when its single "99th floor" was popular in the south. They opened for Jimi Hendrix, and gibbons Took advantage of the opportunity and watched Hendrix control distortion and fuzz tones in his solos. After moving sidewalks broke up Gibbons and bassist Dusty hill and drummer Frank beard both of whom had previously played in Dallas Band American blues. Their first album was literally called the first album and was not immediately a hit. Their biggest hit was called "tush" and they often used images of the Southwest during their concerts. They took a three year break and then came out with hit singles "give me all your love" and "sharp dressed man" from their album eliminator. They toured with Aerosmith.

John Fogerty

Was part of the creedence Clearwater revival band. They broke up but this artist began to experiment with overdubbing and made a number of recordings which he played all instruments including guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums. He used his name for rock recordings by that method but used blue ridge Rangers name for his recordings a traditional country songs. As the Blue Ridge Rangers he had hit singles beginning with Hank Williams "jambalaya (on the bayou)" with his centerfield album he returned to his old rock fans and created a new following for music. He had lawsuits with him and his old CCR members and his old record company but overcame the problems and expressed the love of life in his album blue moon swap. He uses music and towards the back political causes and his album déjà vu all over again was about the Iraq war being another war like the Vietnam war with many American lives lost for no reason. He supported Democratic candidate John Carrie for presidential campaign against George W. Bush. Eventually his old record company fantasy record was bought by new owners what attracted him back to the company. His album revival was nominated for a Grammy award. He performed with a variety of old friends recording with some of those friends on individual songs under the name the blue ridge rangers ride again.
