Emancipation Proclamation

a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 that declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

abolishionists were happy some were upset Lincoln had not freed all enslaved persons, including border statespeople in north said it would only make war longer by cointinuing to anger the south. most union soldiers welcomed emancipation white southerners were angry. many slaves began to run away to union lines which provided the Union with soldiers
