List three uses for lasers.

Cut through metals; make computer chips; cut or repair tissue in surgery;

Why are florescent light bulbs often used in office buildings and schools?

Fluorescent bulbs are very efficient.

Name six common sources of light.

Incandescent, fluorescent, laser, neon, tungsten-halogen, and sodium vapor bulbs

A friend rubs a compact fluorescent bulb on her shirt on a dry day, and the bulb lights for a moment. Propose a hypothesis to explain why.

The static electricity was easily passed off to the bulb because of the dry day. Therefore, it produced light for a short period of time.

How are the six main types of lights similar? How are they different?

They all produce light, but the process or what is needed is different.

Describe how each type of bulb produces visible light.

Tungsten Halogen - A tungsten filament gets hot, Florescent - phosphor steadily emits photons, Sodium Vapor Bulbs - A gas mixture warms, Incandescent - the filaments flow through and get hot, Laser - Excited atoms in any form emit photons

How are tungsten-halogen bulbs different from incandescent bulbs?

Tungsten-halogen bulbs are hotter and use a mixture of inert and halogen gases.
