Partitions

function as independent hard drive and sometimes referred to as logical drives because each one is labeled and treated separately when viewed in a file management program (windows computers), but they are still physically one hard drive.

optical storage devices

Devices that enable the computer to give the user the results of the processed data.

Optical Media

Portable storage devices, such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs, that use a laser to read and write data.

Flash memory

a chip-based storage medium that represents data using electrons

Example of partition

think of a house. if you have one c drive, you have 1 big room. but if you partition it, you'll have two big rooms in the house

floppy drive

A magnetic storage device that reads data from and writes data to a floppy disk, which is a metal disk (usually 3½ in.) inside a rigid plastic case. These are found mostly on older machines—few new ones have floppy drives.

Read only Optical Discs

CD-ROM (compact disc read-only memory) disks and DVD-ROM (digital versatile disc read-only memory) discs are read-only optical discs that come prerecorded with commercial products, such as software programs, clip art, and other types of graphic collections, music, and movies.

Embedded flash memory

Flash memory chips embedded into products, such as consumer devices -Smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and even sunglasses and wristwatches -Usually the primary storage for mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones

Know the two parts that make up storage systems in general.

Storage Medium is a hardware where data is actually stored (DVD or flash memory card). this is inserted into its corresponding storage device( such as dvd drive and flashcard memory card reader) in order to read from or written to. -The storage medium is removable -Storage devices are internal(located in system unit), external(plugged into external port on system unit), or remote (located on another computer ex. network, webserver) -hardware

burning

The act of copying information onto a compact disc (CD) using hardware called a CD burner. - CD and DVD burning software is required. -

cylinder

The collection of tracks located in the same location on a set of hard disk surfaces.

flash memory card

a small card containing one or more flash memory chips, a controller chip, and metal contacts to connect the card to the device or reader being used.

Rewritable Optical Discs

can be written to, erased, and over written just like magnetic hard discs. the most common are CD-RW, DVD-RW(rewritable disc-->) , DVD+RW and BD-RE (rewritable blue ray disc)

usb flash drives

consist of flash memory media integrated into a self-contained unit that plugs into a computer or other device via a USB port. and is powered by that port. -small and portable.

Tracks (magnetic media organization)

(concentric rings) data is stored and recorded in these. they are circular and 1's and 0's are represented magnetically.

sectors (magnetic media organization)

(small pieces of a track) - each track is divided into these.

recordable Optical Discs

(sometimes called write-one discs) can be written to, but the discs cannot be erased and refused. -transferred as CD-R (single-layer recordable DVD's are called DVD-R or DVD+R discs depending on the standard being used and dual-layer disc dvd's are called DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL discs.

Cloud storage

- is accessed via the Internet -Cloud applications (Flickr, Facebook, Google Docs, etc.) -Online storage sites (Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.) -Growing in importance because more and more applications are Web-based -Increasingly used for backup purposes -Files can be synched between PC and cloud storage -Many online storage sites offer some free storage -Business cloud storage is available; businesses can also create private clouds

•Partitions are used to create:

-A recovery partition -A new logical drive for data A dual boot system

optical drives

-The optical drive must support the type of optical disc being used -Almost always backward-compatible -Recording data onto an optical disc is called burning; requires burning software -Optical drives can be internal or external •External drives typically connect via USB port •External drives can be used with netbooks and other devices without an optical drive

hard drive

A storage device that stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating rigid disks with magnetic surfaces. The device is either permanently installed within the computer case or can be portable

CLuster (magnetic media organization)

One or more sectors that constitute the smallest unit of space on a disk for storing data (also referred to as a file allocation unit). Files are written to a disk as groups of whole clusters.

network storage

The use of a storage device that is accessed through a local network.`

Magnetic Media

These devices use moving read and write heads that contain electromagnets. On the surface of the storage medium, there are magnetic dots, that can be magnetically forced to face in one of two directions and depending on the direction that they are in, they represent either 0 (off) or 1 (on)
