PivotTable Field List

A window that lists, at the top, all of the fields—column titles—from the source data for use in the PivotTable report and at the bottom, an area in which you can arrange the fields in the PivotTable.

Report Filter area

An area in the layout section of the PivotTable Field List in which you can position fields by which you want to filter the PivotTable report, thus enabling you to display a subset of data in the PivotTable report.

Tracer arrow

An indicator that shows the relationship between the active cell and its related cell.

PivotTable report

An interactive, cross-tabulated Excel report that summarizes and analyzes large amounts of data.

Field buttons

Buttons on a PivotChart with an arrow to choose a filter, and thus change the data that is displayed in the chart.

Formulas

Equations that perform calculations on values in a worksheet.

Field section

The upper portion of the PivotTable Field List that contains the names of all the field names—the column titles in the source data.

Filter

A process by which you can limit the display of data to only specific information.

Slicers

Easy-to-use filtering controls with buttons that enable you to intuitively drill down through large amounts of data in an interactive way.

Clear Filter

A command that removes a filter.

PivotChart report

A graphical representation of the data in a PivotTable report.

Trace Error command

A tool that helps locate and resolve an error by tracing the selected error value.

Values area

An area in the layout section of the PivotTable Field List in which you can position fields that contain data that is summarized in a PivotTable report or PivotChart report; the data placed here is usually numeric or financial in nature and the data is summarized—summed.

Row Labels area

An area in the layout section of the PivotTable Field List in which you can position fields that you want to display as rows in the PivotTable report; field names placed here become row titles, and the data is grouped by these row titles.

PivotTable

Another name for Excel's PivotTable report.

Precedent cells

Cells that are referred to by a formula in another cell.

Dependent cells

Cells that contain formulas that refer to other cells.

Source data

Data in an Excel worksheet, or from an external source, arranged in columns and rows in a format suitable to be used for a PivotTable report table or range in the current worksheet.

Refresh

The command to update a worksheet to reflect the new data.

Layout section

The lower portion of the PivotTable field list that has four areas where you can build the PivotTable report by rearranging and repositioning fields.

Error Checking command

A command that checks for common errors that occur in formulas.

Trace Dependents command

A command that displays arrows that indicate what cells are affected by the value of the currently selected cell.

Trace Precedents command

A command that displays arrows to indicate what cells affect the value of the cell that is selected.

Field names

The column titles from source data that form categories of data for a PivotTable report.

Column Labels area

An area in the layout section of the PivotTable Field List in which you can position fields that you want to display as columns in the PivotTable report; field names placed here become column titles, and the data is grouped in columns by these titles.

Associated PivotTable report

The PivotTable report in a workbook that is interactive with its PivotTable chart.

Filtering buttons

The buttons on a slicer which you use to select the item by which to filter.

Auditing

The process of examining a worksheet for errors in formulas.

Error value

The result of a formula that Excel cannot evaluate correctly.

Slicer header

This indicates the name at the top of a slicer that indicates the category of the slicer items.

Tools and commands accessible from the Formulas tab that help you check your worksheet for errors.
