What were the Townshend Acts?

In 1767 Charles Townshend was the Treasurer of the British government and he created new taxes on tea, paper, glass, lead, and paint imported from Britain. This tax on goods was a way to raise money and they called it the Townshend Act of 1767.

How did the Daughter's of Liberty respond to the Townshend Acts?

In 1767 women formed these groups to support the boycott against the Townshend Acts. They gave up teas and other good from Britain. They held "spinning bees" to spin thread so that they would not have to import clothes from Britain.

What is the Quartering Act?

It forced colonists to provide British soldiers stationed in America with a place to live in your home if the came knocking on your door. You would have to take care of them and feed them, provide drink and give candles.

What is the Boston Massacre?

It was the killing of 5 colonists during a conflict with British soldiers in Boston in 1770.

What does "No taxation without representation" mean? Be able to explain your answer.

Since colonists did not have representation in British government they felt the British did not have a right to tax colonists but all Englishmen had that right for a long time.

What did the Stamp Act force the colonist to do?

The Stamp Act of 1765 was an unpopular tax because It forced colonists to pay a tax every time they bought a newspaper or pamphlet or signed a legal document and even taxed playing cards! The profits from this tax were sent to England.

How did the British government respond to the Boston Tea party?

The colonists had to pay a tax on tea. On Dec. 16, 1773 a group of colonists disguised as Mohawks went to the Boston Harbor, boarded a ship and dumped 342 chests of expensive tea into the Harbor. The British government including King George III responded by demanding the colonists of Boston to be punished. They closed the Port of Boston until the colonists paid for the tea. Town meetings were banned. Colonists called Parliaments actions for punishment the "INTOLERABLE ACTS of 1773"

Why did the new taxes anger colonist? How do you know?

The colonists were angry because it was unfair taxation and these were attempts by the British to limit their rights. I know because they organized many protests. Also they were mad because the British would tax colonists but the colonists had no representation in British government.

What did the First Continental Congress decide to do?

They sent a petition to King George III asking for the repeal (to get rid of ) of the Intolerable Acts. They agreed to stop trade with Britain and asked the colonists to gather minutemen to defend the cities in battle against Britain.

Who were the Sons of Liberty? What was their goal?

They were colonists who formed this group to fight the Stamp Act. They organized protests against the taxes. One member was Samuel Adams who wrote newspaper articles attacking the Stamp Act.

What effects did the Committees of Correspondence have? Be able to explain your answer.

This committee from to state the rights of the colonists. They wrote each other to inform colonists about important political events in colonies.

What is a boycott?

To NOT buy the taxed goods. Means to refuse to do business or have contact with a person, group, or country.
