Chapter 9 muscles
linea alba
A white line that extends from the sternum to the pubic bone; formed by the aponeurosis of the abdominal muscles
intercostal
Barbecued ribs
quadriceps femoris
Group of muscles that extend or straighten the leg at the knee, as in kicking a football
abdominal muscles
Includes the internal oblique, external oblique, transversus, and rectus
serratus anterior
Jagged muscle that resembles the teeth of a saw, lowers the shoulder and moves the arms - as in pushing a cart
pectoralis major
Large, broad muscle that forms the anterior chest wall; connects the humerus with the clavicle and structures of the chest
gluteus maximus
Largest muscle of body; you sit on it
tibialis anterior
Located over shin bone, causes dorsiflextion
Hamstrings
Muscle group on the posterior surface of the thigh that extends the thigh at the hip and flexes the leg at the knee; antagonist to the quadriceps femoris
bisceps brachii
Muscle that flexes the forearm; "make a muscle"
Deltoid
Muscle that forms the shoulder pads; position arm at "scare crow" position
triceps brachii
Muscle that lies along the posterior surface of the humerus; it extends the forearm and is used to bear weight in crutch - walking
Trapezius
Muscle that shrugs the shoulders and hyperextends the head
Adductors
Muscles located on the medial (inner) surface of the thigh; horseback riders use these muscles to grip the horse with their thighs
intercostal
Muscles responsible for raising rib cage during inhalation
Gastrocnemius
The Achilles' tendon attaches the soleus and this muscle to the heel bone
Gastrocnemius
The calf muscle that is used in plantar flexion; also called the toe dancers muscle
Diaphragm
The chief muscle of inhalation
Sloeus
With regard to plantar flexion; works synergistically with gastrocnemius
Diaphragm
a dome-shaped muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity
Satorius
longest muscle in the body
quadriceps femoris
rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius
latissimus dorsi
the large, broad muscle in the middle and lower back that extends and adducts the humerus and rotates the humerus medially
